  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Kosher is according to the word of the God of Israel.
Halel is offered to allah before it goes to market. I know many would argue the point but allah is NOT the same God as the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob - even the characteristics of these two are totally different, they are not the same. So Halel is food that has been offered to an idol. While not really a major problem for us, nowadays - but why even support such a group? The money has to go somewhere....just sayin'
Ok, I understand.

Anyway, I got some steamed vegetables last night with some eagerness (they weren't as good as I had hoped) and it came already mixed with a seasoned sauce and there was gelatin in it. I was disappointed, and I don't know if gelatin comes from only pigs, or if it can come from cows too. There was no K on the front of the package. It seems as if gelatin is in increasingly more foods these days. It's as if they couldn't use corn starch these days. I feel bad because gelatin is creeping up everywhere.

Yedida is correct

While it is true that Muslims don't eat pork, buying Halal meat is not wise. There are some products that aren't Muslim produced that are Kosher and Halal, like Cabot cheese for instance. They don't use animal rennet, but microbial or vegetable rennet to make their cheeses.

If something isn't marked Kosher and has gelatin listed it is from an animal. And these animals are not kosher, even if it is a clean animal. So even if it was not from swine the gelatin was taken from if it's a cow not properly slaughtered it still isn't kosher.

I am kind of surprised I overlooked that; a cow killed improperly is probably no better than pig gelatin...OK I knew that but yeah, when you put it that way, it seems like there is little to no difference...
Don't fret about it, you are learning and I'm sure HaShem knows that you are trying your best to please him.

Hogs eat their farmer in Oregon
October 01, 2012

COQUILLE, Ore. Oregon authorities are investigating how a farmer was eaten by his hogs.

Terry Vance Garner, 69, never returned after he set out to feed his animals last Wednesday on his farm near the Oregon coast, the Coos County district attorney said Monday.

A family member found Garner's dentures and pieces of his body in the hog enclosure several hours later, but most of his remains had been consumed, District Attorney Paul Frasier said. Several of the hogs weighed 700 pounds or more.

The daily column ‘‘Dr. Lamb’’ from the Abilene Reporter News, states:

Trichinosis is caused by little worms, and these parasites are in pork. Routine meat inspection doesn’t always tell you that it is infected, either. The skin tests that were tried to detect infected pigs haven’t really been successful. The first stage of the trichinosis involvement is when the male and female worms unite in the intestine. The intestinal phase may cause diarrhea and digestive symptoms. The second phase is the migration of the larvae into the circulation and throughout the body, particularly causing little cysts inside the muscles. At this stage, there may be swelling around the eyes, muscle pain, and fever. It has been reported from the laboratory of one of our northern Universities that trichinae-laden swine flesh was heated to an unbelievably high temperature and then put under a microscope. To the amazement of the technicians,
some worms were still alive and moving about. The supposition that all of these worms can be killed in cooking is not to be relied upon.
