  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

From what I'm seeing here, Leo, you want justification to do what you want. We can't give it to you here. However, in GT, you can find others who will meet you at any BBQ and you can down a pork rib sandwich with a side of bacon to your heart's content. Since no one here is forcing you to give up the ways of the pagan world, we're only giving you what has been given to us via the Torah - it's not legalism, only a better way to live. Kind of like us having the cure for cancer and you telling us that we're legalistic when we try to convince you that Tylenol won't heal you. Your choice. :)

Brilliant. Great analogy.

Thanks. It's true. If we'd use the same argument about Torah as we do with an oncologist, they'd roll their eyes and tell us to come back in a year (if we're still alive) to show them our results.
It's that old argument my kids use to try to pull. "You can't make me not touch that hot stove!" To which we reply sometimes with tears in our eyes, "no I can't. I'll get the burn cream and gauze ready."

You're such a Mom!

Me? I'd tell them not to touch it. Then, when they immediately moved towards it, I'd just watch. After the screams, and the expected reaction of yanking back their hand and cradling their finger, I'd say, "Hurts, don't it? Just like I told you it would. Next time, you'll listen."

Well, I wasn't quite that harsh, maybe. ;)

Such a dad!
I'm getting so tired of hearing all the Christian songs on the radio that whine about how they've fallen again and how G~d loves them over and over and no matter what, when they sin. Maybe if our young ones learned that there is a remedy for falling into sin over and over (and, yes I know that we all do it from time to time) - to follow the instructions from the get-go and learn the patterns of righteousness found in His Word - aka Torah.

Never really thought about it like that before...I knew (or thought I did) all about the Acts 15 verses about how the verse after the restrictions explain that "Moses is preached in the synangogue"...but, did not realize until just now how there WERE dietary restrictions. That definitely does blow the "there are no restrictions" argument out of the water.

Sometimes I doubt...hardly ever, but sometimes I doubt about being Torah observant because I am surrounded by Christians telling me otherwise. Then, another confirmation pops up. Thanks Lulav. :)

Many of the posters here are full of gems, Lulav being among one of those shining the brightest (wish I wasn't so dull next to her, maybe in a few more years?). Stay with it and us. Keep asking questions, reading and communing with Abba and you'll be just fine! The nay-sayers won't go away or lessen, but you'll grow much stronger as you ask, read and pray. ;)

I know how you feel. Apart from a couple of really crazy people here, I am the only Messianic I know of, and I'm the only one that is trying to move toward Torah observance. I just read scripture, ask questions here, and do the best I can.

Loopholes? There are LOOPHOLES? ... Who knew ...

Dan (just a couple of degrees off sane myself) C

Hang in there Dan. It hasn't been so long ago that I've forgotten where you're at right now. For myself, it was over a year before I knew there were even other people out there who were trying to follow the Torah, didn't even know it had a name for over a year. I was on a sola scriptura forum and getting shot down with every question and answer, was finally asked to leave (psssst (whisper) I was actually kicked out (or banned, as some call it), I was upsetting too many wheelbarrows). :D Best thing that ever happened to me, I found this place.
Just wanted to say that discussions with you have been very enjoyable. Glad you're here. (The same goes to Mrs.94 .)

I havent thread through the 7 pages, but I just wanted to give my input on the bone with bacon.

Bacon is on the uprise because 1) its cheap/inexpensive 2) its salty and 3) if you think about it, it does really go with a LOT of things! So to me, it is normal for restaurants to push bacon.

Now on the flip side of things, of course we MJs know that bacon is a no-no because God simply said it wasnt mean to be food. But there are many doctors actually that prescribe a diet similar to the kosher diet.

Too much bacon just simply isnt healthy and I think people know that. Sometimes I wonder if God made the Bible nowdays if he'd add a LOT more no-no foods to the list... :shrug

I really don't see it as an "obsession" so much that during times of economic distress, pork is one of the most bio-available meats that is inexpensive to feed, upkeep, slaughter and sell.

Also, with the uptick of Paleo/Primal and GAPS/SCD diets, especially in cultures of the US where pork is integral to the diet (Germanic peoples, the South for example) - there will be an uptick of pork consumption and it appearing in recipes that are put up on foodie-type sites and blogs.

I honestly have always seen it everywhere, so I'm actually seeing it less...

Yep, I live in the South so I see it a LOT.

I'm from Ga. and when I returned to the state from 2009-2012 I was surprised to find an excellent "home-cooking" restaurant that actually did NOT use bacon/pork parts to flavor their meals (veggies especially)! I was thrilled! Really good southern cooking that I could eat, and it was exceptionally reasonably priced to boot! I miss that restaurant. Where I live in Ohio "home-cooking" in restaurants means canned and instant (I could do that for much less money too!). Uggghhh!!!

am I the only one who doesn't like the smell of porky things like bacon and ham? I find them a bit uncomfortable to smell IMHO.

it is said (though I don't know if it's sensationalist propaganda) that pig flesh is somehow similar to human flesh and that the smell and taste of pigs is like that of humans.

I wonder if that is the reason why the smell of pig meat makes me uncomfortable. But if that is the case, why wouldn't it make more people uncomfortable?

Home cooking in the NE is an oxymoron. Apologies to any Yankees, but you know it's true! :p

yep. I never gave it much thought until I gave it up. It's in EVERYTHING back home. You cannot go out to eat anywhere if avoiding pork in my hometown. You can't eat at anyone's home.

I know what you mean. I'm at the point right now where if I'm served pork-n-beans, I just remove the pork and eat the beans and don't worry about the contamination. I'm still trying to wrap my head around the what and the how, and the survival of it all! :help:

Fortunately I live in the NW now, so the food isn't so hard to resist most of the time (hey, "you guys" know it's true too  ) I'm originally from the SW, and honestly, if I'd stayed there I'd have eaten myself to death by now!

I don't like turkey bacon on its own, but it's a great flavoring replacement for my veggies and it does fine in sandwiches - just no more eggs, bacon and grits breakfasts! But, you know, I really don't miss bacon, or ham. Last week we were completely out of food in the kitchen except for some pork chops my ex had bought for himself and our daughter to have a "bonding together meal." I was soooo hungry, I went ahead and took one, one bite, second bite spit out, couldn't do it. It was horrible tasting and I wasn't truly starving to death, so... We had one half loaf of Italian bread, that was my dinner instead. (Ends of months are hard.)

Boy, I hear that. I've been in the South my entire life (AL, GA and FL) and you almost can't find a place that sells veggies that ham or bacon wasn't used to season it. :doh:Including the hospital I work in.

Yes, LOL.

I think you are correct. It is why pigs valves can be used in heart surgeries. Another thing most people don't know is that in an emergency you can use veterinary grade medicines to treat some fairly serious problems. The general rule is to follow the dosage on the chart for a swine of the same approximate weight. Now, I'm not suggesting anyone do this; it may even be prohibited in a remez kind of way ... just sayin'.

I wonder if that is the reason why the smell of pig meat makes me uncomfortable. But if that is the case, why wouldn't it make more people uncomfortable?

Actually, it probably has more to do with how you were raised. But it does make one wonder if maybe the Creator knew what He was doing when He wrote the Law. Or if ha satan knew when he convinced some the Law was invalid.

my dad is a Muslim (the reason why religion conflict with my dad is atrocious) so we were not raised on eating pork. so I don't know if that is the reason. I know I am in the minority but the smell of pork to me is very weird. I don't get queasy on the smell, it's just that I feel a certain "goes against my conscience" resistance to it because of the smell. Something tells me that it isn't right to put that stuff in one's mouth, but this may all be subjective.
