I recently started a thread about the pros and cons of having a single, unified, worldwide church, as opposed to the many denominations we currently have. Certainly, when we pass onto the resurrection, we will have a single, unified, worldwide church.

Not if Yahweh's directions are followed in the assembly.
(which obviously is rare, almost unheard of)
I think that's the problem - sometimes the vainest people are able to maneuver themselves into positions of leadership.

But for the time being, I would suggest that, people being the way they are, a single, unified, worldwide church's objectives would not fully align with the Lord's objectives, and for that reason, the Lord would rather there be denominations. I think the Tower of Babel is suggestive of this.
A large tree attract birds, who end up nesting high in its branches. The birds are not part of the tree, but build their nest egg there and insists the tree caters to their whims. They rule with impunity, unwilling to accept any scrutiny. And tinker with doctrine to maintain their institution control, taking away Christ's Lordship and replacing it with their own.

The fact that individuals, wolves in sheep's clothing, will use the Church for personal power is a big driving force for the splits and denominations. However their nature is always exposed and other individuals always call them out on ignoring, manipulating, changing Christs words, eventually. This can lead to a split or a change within a church.

For this reason, I think, splits can be a good thing. Following what Jesus laid out in the Gospels is what is important. A unified church would only be possible if nobody ever tried to gain power for themselves and that won't happen.

A single, world wide church which is institutionally unified in this current sinful age would certainly be frightening.

What makes people think that the church is not unified?

There's no indication in Scripture that the 'Church' will be in the life after this life.
Quite the opposite, thankfully - no 'Church' after this life.
Thankfully, due to , well, look around.... do you see people obedient to Yahweh ? People who refuse to harm another person ? People who have not one iota of greed in their life ? People in whom there is not one lie ?
No.

Why would anyone think that the church is unified ?

for now, the wheat and the tares grow together.

for the most part, the Church is unified. they just don't all worship in one building or all have the exact same doctrinal beliefs. most of these doctrinal distinctives are minor romans 14 adiaphora. in these cases we should seek unity as much as is possible and not be divisive. examples of this would be paedobaptists/credobapists, "trib-mill" differences, regulative principle of worship, Calvinist/arminians, infralapsarian/supralapsarian, etc.

the ones that aren't tend to be legitimately heretical sects and shouldn't be counted in the number of the saints.

I think more than likely the reason we must have many churches is that all people are raised from childhood differently with different teachings and beliefs, and they can't all accept one unified church due to their beliefs.

Beliefs are a difficult thing to change and it can be very painful and scary to change core beliefs.

One church is good for one type of person while another church is better for other types of personalities.

And perhaps there's nothing wrong with that?
