Hi brothers and sisters.

I am witnessing to a friend and am in need of information.

I am specifically looking for names of authors who wrote books attempting to disprove the Bible who got saved because of this quest.

More specifically I am seeking scientist authors with more impressive credentials to hold more weight with skeptics than the average layman.

Thank you,

Marney

These two books come to mind:

"The Case for Christ" by Lee Strobel
Lee was a journalist with the Chicago Tribune and sets out a
personal investigation of the evidence for Jesus.

"The Case for Faith" by Lee Strobel

This is Amazon.com's review of this book:

Award-winning reporter and author Lee Strobel (The Case for Christ) once again uses his investigative skills to address the primary objections to Christianity. As a former atheist, Strobel understands the rational resistance to faith. He even names the eight most convincing arguments against Christian faith:

1) If there's a loving God, why does this pain-wracked world groan under so much suffering and evil?

2) If the miracles of God contradict science, then how can any rational person believe that they're true?

3) If God is morally pure, how can he sanction the slaughter of innocent children as the Old Testament says he did?

4) If God cares about the people he created, how could he consign so many of them to an eternity of torture in hell just because they didn't believe the right things about him?

5) If Jesus is the only way to heaven, then what about the millions of people who have never heard of him?

6) If God really created the universe, why does the evidence of science compel so many to conclude that the unguided process of evolution accounts for life?

7) If God is the ultimate overseer of the church, why has it been rife with hypocrisy and brutality throughout the ages?

8) If I'm still plagued by doubts, then is it still possible to be a Christian?

"The Case for Faith" is an excellent book for your friend to read and I highly recommend it. Lee is a God-fearing, God-centered believer in Christ. I always enjoy hearing him teach the Word and hearing his testimony of his life as an atheist, award-winning journalist to a born-again believer.

I haven't read Strobel's books, although one of them is on my "short" list of apologetics to read. I have, however, heard a number of people who expressed concerns about his methodology; he's clearly not a "real" skeptic.

I have not heard of anyone "seeking" to disprove the Bible. The evidence is sufficiently ambiguous that most people can easily find reasons for doubt if they really want; it's also ambiguous enough that it's easy to find it convincing, if you want. I don't think the physical evidence is very informative either way; in the end, I believe in the Bible because of God, not the other way around.

As always, C. S. Lewis can be a great source of apologetics.

If your friend is bound and determined to read books by skeptics who were convinced by physical evidence, I'm afraid I can't help. The physical evidence is a bit thin after two thousand years and more.

Lee was clearly a skeptic before he became a born-again Christian. He was an atheist and was as skeptical of Chritianity as any atheist could be. And, yes, Lee is "clearly not a 'real' skeptic" because he is now a born-again Christian. :) You cannot be a skeptic and a Christian at the same time, not on the crutial doctrines, that is. (Rom. 10:8,9)

Lee is one of our pastors and I have heard his testimony several times. He has made a 180 degree turn about and is a God-fearing, God-centered believer. I can vouch for him on this account.

I have heard that those who are skeptical of his methodology are from the Internet Infidel network and do not know him or are familiar with his background, I suspect. I'm not surprised at their objections.

Josh McDowell is another Christian apolgetic writer that sought to disprove the Bible when he began his quest for the truth. His book, "Evidence That Demands A Verdict" is one of the best known in the Christian world. It is considered an apologetic classic by many.

Josh McDowell is also a regular speaker at PK events. I have had the pleasure of hearing him 2 times. His books are the best. His testimony is powerful and convincing in person and "evidence that demands a verdict" has been the breakthrough for many people. I pray for His ministry.

Blessings
