brinny, what do you mean when you ask about death being abrupt? It's the second time you've used that word, so I'm wondering if you could clarify. It seems like there is something you're trying to get at.

death is something i have struggled with. To be living, breathing, experiencing, and then it just stops. ....suddenly the antithesis to all of that engulfs and swallows one whole. it has ALWAYS bothered me...the abruptness. It's akin to a ripping away the carpet from under one, so to speak. ...in the blink of an eye....that's abrupt.

That sounds like insecurity to me. Perhaps one does need to attain a certain measure of security in oneself in order to face death without experiencing the "carpet-ripping" feeling. Personally, I try to place my main focus on life -- the good memories, the good in the Now, the good plans for whatever time I have left -- rather than to dwell on death. I think that takes some of the edge off.

Life does have sharp edges. This is an unpleasant fact, but there is still plenty of value in life to cherish and appreciate.

"All dressed up and nowhere to go."

LOL!

If I were to get a cryonic suspension, on the side of the container of liquid nitrogen where my frozen body would be, I would want the letters inscribed: "brb".

As fun as those options are, I will probably opt for cremation.

Wrap me in a white sheet. Stick me in the ground.

that's an awfully rude to say the least, and rather abrupt loss.

i don't much likes it.
Not abrupt enough for some people who suffer from severe cognitive and physical decline.
.
As for rude? That implies a consciousness behind this appointment called death. Just because we cling to our self doesnt make its loss "rude".
.
PLUS... we all know it's coming, which *should* mitigate these distressing perceptions.

I couldn't say I see death as abrupt in general. I'd only see abrupt deaths... err... abrupt. If I knew I was going to die and slowly lose body functions in the meantime until my death then it wouldn't be abrupt at all.

Looked at technically, however, we could see the immediate change from consciousness and a beating heart to unconsciousness and a non-beating heart as enormous contrast, and therefore it would be very abrupt. Slow deaths (even in this view) would be abrupt. I'm not self-aware on the cellular level though so I stick to calling only things like death by bus abrupt.

Just a practical view. That all could probably have been said more concisely, but meh.

But keep in mind, no serious Unicorninst believes that a unicorn really is a critter with a horn on its head, or that it can only be approached by virgins. Ultimately, unicorns are way beyond us, and the stuff about the horns, the virgins, the clover shaped hooves, or any other of the hippomorphisms (?did I do it right?) are just flawed metaphors to describe what we can never fully grasp.

:p

So what is the significance of the Unicornist belief that one should stick a ripe banana in one's favorite ear?
