  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

You only have a match when you enter a dark and cold room. You come across an oil lamp, an oil heater, and a candle. Which do you light first?
The match .

I say he is overoptimistic about the abilities of the human mind. An explanation accounts for the facts. It doesn't have to make sense to the human mind, because the true explanation may very well be incomprehensible to said mind.

Just because it goes against our intuition and common sense, doesn't mean it's false. Just because it doesn't make sense, doesn't mean it's false. Penrose is a smart man, but I have to disagree with him here.

One last thing: then could something be illogical and true at the same time?

Yes --- Creation.

It violates science, it violates [human] logic, it violates uniformitarianism, it violates thermodynamics, it violates...

--- I don't get it.

(But it's funny.)

Is it because QM produces so many paradoxes?
It's because, quantum mechanically, a particle can be in two places at once. The Double Slit experiment shows that an electron can go through both slits at the same time. Freaky stuff.

I believe it refers to the double slit experiment where if a photon is released and has to pass through one slit on its way to a receptor it actually takes both slits.

No. If it's illogical (e.g., it asserts two mutually exclusive things at the same time), then it's false. That's how proof works.

Aww, and you came all the way here just to tell us that. I'm flattered.

Yes, quite.

After that brief interlude, any more physics questions?
