  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Is it possible that the upper U.S. is going to super freeze within the next two weeks?

I've heard that it has been called the "Iceman cometh" or something super weird like this.

I just reinstalled Windows XP on my computer so I can't find the link again.

Apparently, there are some scientists who believe that cities like Chicago won't even get a high temperature for the day above 0 degrees Farenheit later this month.

I'm not so sure if I'm quite ready for such a blowfest like this. :)
Global warming does predict such adverse weather patterns. It matters not whether it is man induced or a natural cycle; Whichever may be the cause, one thing is for certain; Mankind is in for a very rough ride this century!

No. Usually I qualify things with 'probably', but... no :p There may be some cold weather, and the UK is still in the grip of a nasty cold snap... but nothing on par with The Day After Tomorrow!

I would never compare this world to a cheesy movie. :)

But yeah, I think in ten days from now, I'll be a little bit super chilly. :)

Have you heard about this upcoming front that will hit the upper U.S.?

It hasn't been on any of the local news just yet.

You buy out the media and lie lie lie!
Deny, deny, deny! Then lie, lie, lie. Because as Goebels used to say: "The bigger the lie the more it will be believed".

What are wormholes?
They're what happens when a physical system (e.g., a ball of matter) undergoes some event (e.g., being crushed) that makes one of its properties (e.g., density) sky-rocket to infinity.

The result is a singularity. When matter collapses in on itself, and the gravity causes it to collapse further, the density goes up and up - the result is a singularity, because one of its properties is basically infinite, and this particular singularity is called a black hole.

A wormhole is where two black holes 'join'. This happens because black holes warp space around them, and can occasionally join two distant points in space together, like so:

time-travel-wormhole1.jpg

The flat bit is space, and the tunnel is where the two black holes have created funnels in space, which meet, creating a tunnel.

Wormhole!

How do they join when up since I thought spacetime is flat?

Hey, I already told the Chinese!

Spacetime is like a big block of rubber, all wibbley. Black holes warp space, pulling it towards itself. So black holes pull other black holes - and other wibbles in space. When those wibbles intersect, they merge like two bubbles colliding.

Wormhole!

Ok thanks. Hopefully my GR module will explain blackholes in more detail.

Now how do you get 4 figures in a 2 by 2 format in latex? ;)

There's only so much I can do with pure text without bogging it down :p

Buhhhhhhhhh

Well I wasn't expecting you to write a paper on the subject :p But I get about 15 hours next term to lean about GR and hopefully black holes will be covered.

Doesn't matter, I used the epicness of paint to merge all my images into one and now latex is playing nicely.

Ah the joys of writing a report for monday

Who knew that when you force yourself to stay up to do work, forums become really really appealing ^_^

LaTeX is a pain in the behind - so I got someone else to do my papers in my first year of uni :p

First year was Microsoft Office all the way but when your supervisor tells you that he prefers latex, I got to impress.
Mine was an old Russian professor whose grasp of English... wasn't so good, to the extent that we had no idea what equations he was using. So I went away, derived the same result, and so we had a clear idea what all the terms meant.

I don't know if he was just mental, or if it's standard in Russian, but I couldn't for the life of me figure out what was going on :p
