  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It has been suggested that atheist is synonymous with antitheist.

That suggestion is not true.

I'd like to know how many antitheists are here.

I'm not an anti-theist as such. While I think that religions can have their excesses, they may also exist in relatively benign forms.

I don't care enough to be anti-theist. I will, sometimes, take a stand against specific positions that tend to come from theists, but in general if they aren't bothering me I won't bother them.

I don't hate religion. I'm just not a huge fan of any of them (except maybe Buddhism, Buddhists are cool), especially the ones that love to proselytize:

**flaring nostrils and crazy eyes intensify** "Believe what this BOOK says or burn in hell!!!"

....................yeah, no lol.

Yeah, that is a bummer......But it is what it is.........

Lazarus and the Rich Man - Here a little, there a little - Commentary

The parable of Lazarus and the rich man has been the foundation for many of the erroneous beliefs about "hell" within traditional Christianity. Some have viewed it not as a parable, but as a true story Yeshua told to give details about the punishment of sinners in hell.
Yet a thorough, unbiased examination of this story will show that the generally accepted interpretations of this passage of Scripture are erroneous and misleading. In this article, we will go through the parable verse by verse to determine what the Messiah was truly teaching................

Rev 20:
10

and the Devil, who is leading them astray, was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where are the beast and the false prophet,
and they shall be tormented day and night -- to the ages of the ages.
14
and the death and the hades were cast to the lake of the fire -- this is the second death;

15
and if any one was not found written in the scroll of the life, he was cast to the lake of the fire.

Rev 19:20
and the beast was taken, and with him the false prophet who did the signs before him, in which he led astray those who did receive the mark of the beast, and those who did bow before his image;
living they were cast -- the two -- to the lake of the fire, that is burning with brimstone;

I'm talking more overall character. From my experience it's quite true.

Most people also massively pick and choose when it comes to what they will follow and what they won't follow in religion. Most of the time the rotten apples will be rotten apples regardless.
Quite true and a mostly accurate assessment, IMHO.
As with many questions of this kind, this is too simplistic.

I am not a "general" antitheist, no. It am not opposed to theism as a general position, and I am definitly not opposed - or hate! - theists, as has been suggested in another thread.

But when I observe occurances in reality that I see as "bad", and can understand them to be caused by theism, or I see people being "evil" because of their theism... then, yes, in these instances I oppose the theism that caused this.........

(So perhaps you can adjust the poll to add a not-appropriate/explain further option? ;))
I agree. Even "other" would suffice me thinks.

Matthew 5:16
so let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works, and may glorify your Father Who is in the heavens.
1 Peter 2:12
Conduct yourselves with such honor among the Gentiles/Heathens that, though they slander you as evildoers, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us.

You're certainly entitled to your beliefs. The bible is just stories to me (personally), but if this is what you believe, that's cool. Do you.

That is what what most, if not all, religions are based on, imho.

Poetry in the Hebrew Bible
*snip*

As Hebrew poetry is written much differently than our own Western style of poetry, many do not recognize the poetry which can cause problems when translating or interpreting passages written in poetry.

Approximately 75% of the Hebrew Bible is poetry. All of Psalms and Proverbs are Hebrew poetry and many other books, such as the book of Genesis, are filled with poetry.
The reason much of the Bible was written in poetry is that it was originally sung and stories that are sung are much easier to memorize that when simply spoken. There is much more poetry in the Bible than most realize because most people do not understand it.

The most common form of poetry in the Hebrew Bible is parallelisms, which is the expression of one idea in two or more different ways.

Yeah, I never understood why some people took the bible so literally, even as a kid. I always thought they were simply stories meant to keep people in line/control the masses, much like how parents lie to their children about Santa, so they'll behave themselves.

I haven't read thru all the posts here yet, but did you at any time belong to a Religion?

No I was never officially a part of any religion. My parents are Unitarian Universalist Christians, and they never pressured any of their daughters to follow their religion. They're pretty chill parents. When my older sisters converted to Judaism (one conservative and the other reform), they were incredibly supportive. When I told them I was an atheist, they were totally cool with it.
