When I read the Old Testament it gives me an idea of who (or what the character of) the Heavenly Father is, and by that I mean the Holiness that is the Father. If there is Holiness on his part there should quite naturally be reverence on "our part." The other (older) gentleman is stating his beliefs I would think based on upon his reverence for God and his Word. I think our modern society has forgotten who our God is, and about his Holy nature.
That is a BAD mistake to forget about the pure Holiness our God embodies. Being nonchalant about spiritual issues that might arouse our God to anger is someting I would certainly take a pass on. Further, a Christian person's (especially a pastor) demeanor and attitude can and should reflect that nature of God in dealing with other people's even if they are of a faith different than Christian (and probably especially then). Love and patience would be the expected "fruit" that a Christian should show in their own lives (and attitudes).
People that have the "fruit of the Spirit" sort of stick out from the norm. Anybody can have a condescending and spiritually cold attitude (it is part and parcel of being a sinful human). To often in a situation like this you have two sides pitting against each other. But the attitudes and the positions are telling factors usually.
Who is supporting the Holiness of our God? Our God's name is "Jealous" according to the bible. He does not share his Glory with none....save his own SON Jesus!
