Record sales don't mean squat. The Velvet Underground's debut sold about .005 copies in its first year, and now it's considered one of the most influential albums in rock history.

If Hootie And The Blowfish's music could be analyzed by an objective talent-judging machine, it would start exploding out of violent anger after 30 seconds.

forgive me for being rude, but most of the time the record sales do.that means people like them.

The comments about that aren't about people liking them, though - quality, talent, and influence exist separately from what people like or dislike, although at times they coincide (in the Top 40 charts, this tends to be rather rare, but it does happen sometimes).

Don't underestimate the power of the record industry limiting what people can hear and overhyping a band to the point of people thinking it's the best thing since sliced bread. It has happened before, and it's really the only thing keeping the industry afloat, aside from charging way too much for CDs.

Hootie and the Blowfish's "Broken Rearview Mirror" was over hyped, over played by both radio and MTV. It was just a major burn out on them. So much so that I think I still am burnt out and the rest of America at that time. I still have their CD, but I don't know if I could play it even though I do like some of their pop songs.

If actually seen them in concert twice (hey, they were both free concerts and my best friend loves them). They are a pretty talented band. I understand that they aren't for everyone though. Darius does an amazing acapella version of Amazing Grace, btw. And then, there is always this:

I remember that commercial, too.

The same year that this artist, Martin Page came out with
"In The House Of Stone and Light", making me wonder which artist/band did better in '94.
And that song and ARTIST, ROCKS.

Perhaps you should have made a thread about Martin Page instead of Hootie and the Blowfish?

I like their first CD, Cracked Rear View. And aside from Looking For Lucky (which I thought was crap except for "The Killing Stone" and "Autumn Jones"), I haven't heard much else from them. So I can't really form an opinion on everything they've done. But going by the two, I can safely say they're just alright. They didn't change rock, and they weren't original, but they weren't Creed or Nickelback, either. So, yeah. Alright.
