I have been thinking about how the early church began in upper rooms and in secret places around the city. What that would have been like. The realness of it in the aftermath of Christs crucifixtion and resurrection.
I think it was simple and a re enactment of the Upper Room. Do this in memory of Christ. How this brought Christ into their midst and how this empowered them to go on to become like Christ. Upper rooms popping up all over the place in secret.
There have been archeological discoveries of secret chapels throughout the Roman Empire. This simple single worship was at the core of worship and everything else stemmed from that.
But also I think it made Christians one body. By participating in the bread of Christ they were committing their bodies to Christ in union. Christ being the central figure that held it all together.
I have also noticed that this kind of worship did not depend on the culture or on elaborate sermons. If there were any sermons they came from the central union of sharing the bread of Christ. I think this was anything that was a stumbling block to living out the bread of Christ. That is living as Christ in the world. It was inhouse and not shared with the world. They avoided being like the world and all the social justice and concerns about conforming to the world.
The early church worshipped in secret because they wanted to avoid being sucked into the world. The world hated them for Christs sake.
I think in some ways history is repeating itself where simply worshipping in Christs name is becoming controversial and even hated. This is where I think some will come back to the simple worship of one bread and one body. The ongoing threat will drive Christians closer to the core of what one bread and one body is in reality. Just as it was in the early church times.
But in turn I think as a result bold Christians will rise up like in early times. All things come to pass.
