I took a tour of Howe Cavernes in upstate NY and it was awesome. The river we toured it in, in a boat, was so cold though. I could feel it through the bottom of the boat. I thought my feet would freeze!!! No ice needed for ice water! The colors in the cave were so beautiful though. The tour was maybe a mile long, way under the ground. We had to take an elevator down to the level where the river was.

Oh yeah I remember going there. I went when I was a kid too. I can't remember exactly where in New York it is though.

Year around temperature of 58 degrees, no sunlight and no house cleaning? Sign me up!
You'll have to install a fireplace for me.

Absolutely, and yes, I'm weird to. :)

I even looked into it a bit, and if I could get, or already had property with the proper cave, I would do all I could to make that happen...then spend the rest of my life piddling with it, and making everyone else wish they had a cave too. :)

Seriously though, I bet the property was cheap because they couldn't even find a place for a house the grade was so steep, and I wonder how much it cost to have it blasted?

It may very well not only be doable but economical, all depending.

During the great tuberculosis epidemic, some people lived in caves in my state. The temperature is a constant 57 degrees F. That means little firewood is needed. That requires potable water found within...but often the water had high sulphur. This is how early bomb shelters during wartime were in caves. That led to a DUMB being in my state ie a deep underground military base. If selected in case of national Emergency, you reported to the DUMB. Supposedly it is no longer operational.

If you think about it, root cellars are made to recreate the constant cool temperature of caves. Spring houses due to the properties of water could achieve colder temperatures and hence served as quasirefrigeration for items like milk.

Civil war soldiers fighting as jayhawkers for the North or bushwhackers for The South were irregular militia. They would essentially build a root cellar to control the temperature and try to heat it up with a fire but due to patrols couldn't light the fire during the day. Thus they could get sick being exposed to constant temperatures below 60 degree F. If drafty that makeshift rootcellar didn't control whatsoever in Winter.

My Wife thinks I should live in a cave lol.

Seriously considering the Protection, Water supply , and potential food source of fish it would make a great place to survive the worst.
Huge amounts of granite surrounding you, hidden entrances and exits.
With today's technology , you could have electric and even lithium powered
Small carts or motorcycles.
Who wouldn't want angry bears as guard dogs?
Shock collars and deer meat would keep them going.
I honestly see a great potential for shelter in caves, maybe not with everything I want but you could survive.

One big problem. No septic system. you have no place to dump human waste. You cant put it in the stream inside the cave ... that is your water source.

But you could use a cave az a backup to a house or a cabin.

Depending on the cave, you might also have a problem with bats.

Blessings!!
