  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anybody know if Rob Reiner is okay?

Wow, so sad. The article also had Trump's crazy response. Just as sad.

I thought it was heartfelt and appropriate for a head of state.

A loving, very not inappropriate message from our President about this incident. Truly an example we should all strive for. Try not to cry from the outpouring of emotion.
He really is a pathetic, narcissistic toddler.

Insane.

Makes me think of all the tweets we’ll be reading when his day finally comes.

At which point all his supporters and sycophants will instantly forget all the things Trump said about others and cry over all the mean people making fun of Trumps death.

Does this mean that it's now acceptable to say that Charlie Kirk is to blame for his own death?
The "nitpick" response would that the deaths happened under two different sets of circumstances and motives.

That aside, Rob Reiner seemed to be of a mindset similar to mine with regards to "why should we have to pretend to respect someone we had no respect for just because they died?"

Rob Reiner Circa 2021 (the day after Rush Limbaugh died):
Rush Limbaugh is gone. But there is no scarcity of other purveyors of disinformation like him left in his wake. To protect our Democracy we must remain vigilant in calling out their big lies. Starting with climate change.

Gooses and Ganders and all that jazz... Seems Reiner wasn't opposed to taking the death of a political rival (who injected themselves into politics) and using that as a basis for making a political statement of their own.

It's funny because I remember linking that in the Limbaugh thread when it happened (because I was also bashing Limbaugh), and then this same kind of conversation happened all over again when Dick Cheney died.

Awww...but Rush died...it's in such bad taste to say anything bad about him, because dying (literally something that will happen to all of us) means everyone else has to pretend to like you and soften their rhetoric for a month or two </sarcasm>

Back to reality
Rob Reiner injected himself into politics the same way Rush Limbaugh and Charlie Kirk did, and as I showed above, wasn't opposed to the "stick the boot in while the body's still warm" approach if it was a person he didn't like.

Had it been someone like a Keanu Reeves (someone who's known for being non-controversial, nice guy, charitable, and keeping his politics to himself and going out of his way to stay out of all that sort of mess), and a politician went on a tirade about him, that'd be a different story.

...and for that matter, I don't even know that the "tepid obligatory acknowledgment" (like we saw a bunch of people do for Kirk) would've made a difference either.

You know, that cheesy:
"Well, even though I disagreed with his politics, it's sad that... yada yada yada"
(that nobody takes seriously)

It certainly didn't work when Trump made much more gracious comments about Ruth Bader Ginsburg's passing.

We all remember this right?

And then the Twitter/Facebook onslaught of "well if you thought she was so amazing or had any respect for her, then why are you trying to undermine and undo all the things she fought for, huh????"

Not in any meaningful way - if we take Trump's claim at face value, Reiner was killed because he said mean things about Trump. Similarly, some claimed that Kirk was killed for saying mean things about liberals and trans people. Surely you can recognize the irony of the Right losing their collective minds over anyone implying that Kirk somehow might have deserved to be killed (or even that they just didn't feel all that broken up by his death) and then shrugging their shoulders and saying "Meh" when Trump says the same thing about someone they dislike?

Interesting how people who do not care a lick about you and people who, you will never be allowed into their world. Can cause such polarization among people arguing over what they say and do. When you have no say in or control over the world they live in, which is not your world and most likely will never be (unless you win the 100 billion$ lottery). Then they may take notice of you not because of you, but because of the money you now have.

It is funny how many think their world of theater is real, well welcome to the show.

Wow did this thread actually switch to being about Trump? Seriously? Unbelievable.
Seriously.

Who first made Rob Reiner’s death about Trump?

Oh that’s right. Trump did.
