  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Does anyone know if Genesis 3 v1 has been proven true:

' 1 Now the serpent was more cunning than any beast of the field which the LORD God had made.'

and by which tests?

Note added June 19: 'Serpent' appears to be an archaic term for 'snake':

Genesis 3 (Contemporary English Version)1The snake was sneakier than any of the other wild animals that the LORD God had made. One day it came to the woman and asked, "Did God tell you not to eat fruit from any tree in the garden?"

Note added July 14

Matthew 10 v16: 'Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves.' So the New Testament backs up the Old Testament as snakes are given as the prime example of wisdom in Matthew.

Again, if humans want to study animal intelligence there is clear Biblical proof that the the animals to study are not some gibbering chimps but snakes

Genesis 3:1 is already true -- (it isn't true because it was written, it was written because it's true).

And the serpent in this case was a dragon.

It is a rather special cookie, it is the very one broken by AV1611VET while explaining something about the Grand Canyon.

The HTTP cookie is a different entity altogether.

The snake is an elongate legless, carnivorous reptile. Being a reptile it is an air-breathing tetrapod that reproduces using tough shelled amniotic eggs which are in many cases laid but in some species hatch internally resulting in live birth.

In the U.S. alone last year, more than three lawnmowers were produced.

It can't be tested unless you have access to that serpent. It says "the serpent", not "serpents".

The African Elephant is the largest land animal.

An adult male typically reaches 5.4 tonnes but some reach weights as high as 6.8 tonnes.

I don't think the argument based on just the use of the singular vs plural is convincing since both are acceptable in English.

What the Hebrew means I don't know and could clinch the case one way or the other. On the other hand since there are differences in most texts and interpretations it is also entirely possible that it won't.

The comparison in Gen 3 with the beasts of the field suggests to me that it is another creature and nothing supernatural.

If it is still around we should easily spot it because it will be sliding around on it's belly.

Who said it was supernatural?

Lucifer waited until Eve was in proximity of the Tree of Knowledge, then he entered what I think was Eve's favorite pet animal, the dragon, and started dialoging with her.

You don't think Lucifer stayed inside this dragon-turned-serpent, do you?

Beyond any shadow of a doubt, you're absolutely right, or absolutely wrong, or something else.

Did Lucifer enter the dragon which then became a serpent?

Yeah! The dragon met his match! (Matches used to be called "lucifers".) Must be why dragons are said to breath fire... so why don't serpents?

This is interesting, and I'm asking native speakers and Judaism followers (actually Judaism followers who are native speakers) for an inside idea of what this text specifically means (ie- one specific creature, or a general class of creatures)
Since they (I would guess) have the greatest grasp of Bereshit (you know, being not only believers, but also native speakers), I await their insight.

For my part, I was just joking when I made the comment about singular vs. plural. I thought the OP was being tongue-in-cheek about pretending that Genesis is actually making a scientific statement about the intelligence of snakes. But maybe he was serious, I don't know.

That's all right then, for a bit I thought you were speaking with forked tongue
