  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

yeah, I avoid both of those like it's going out of style. once in the political subforum I made the mistake of saying President Obama was not the Biblical Antichrist...yeah....

My experience is quite the same to be honest and I'd like to add that ninety percent of the people there are aiming at convincing others about their beliefs (including myself of course, that's a given) which reduces the purpose of the "eco chamber" profoundly in my opinion.

Most of the times I'm discussing things there I leave with a strong feeling of superiority which fills my heart with nasty pride.
In prayer and contemplation I'm able to restore some humility and remember that I'm dust.

Prayer and solitude are the antithesis of that of GT and polemical discussions.

I dislike the fact that for many, what seems to speak the loudest is who can "zing" others with sacracasm and scorn the most effectively. That is not generally a tactic born from any holy source, so ... we may even risk looking nothing but foolish to onlookers, making them even less likely to accept truth. Not that it should matter to us if we appear foolish to others, but that it simply props up error in the minds of others. And tempts our misguided brethren to sin in their desire to shout us down.

It's not an easy place to navigate with any grace, so I try to avoid it as well. My SF forbid me several years ago to argue in Christian forums online and trying to follow that simple advice has served me very well (though I certainly fail at times).

>>>afflicted with 40 mg/day prednisone induced "roid" rage since the last Saturday, and undoubtedly not the best person to be helping anyone through struggles with anger at this point. I just got a whole, somewhat old thread over in general theology permanently closed down today, without even trying to be the slightest bit mean, rather, but merely being truthful. Sometimes truth can cause harm, I suppose, and at such times may best be kept to oneself until such a time when the other is able to benefit from it, rather than be harmed by it.
Huh. I never thought of that. Thanks for mentioning it. My doctor has had me on a steroid since last fall and only assures me side effects are nonexistent (despite label warnings). I'm weaning myself off with his approval because while it helps, I refuse to remain on it for the rest of my life so will have to seek other solutions.

At the risk of giving myself an "excuse" lol ... better to just consider myself very very VERY far from being perfected! ^_^:sorry:

I realize this is probably one of those "ask your priest" situations, but I need to rant. I really struggle with something, specifically anger. Not anger as in having a bad temper, but anger as in impatience and condescension towards people I view as intellectually inferior to myself(I suppose that's more pride? Idk). It even regularly happens right on these very forums. I get into an argument and then I'm just like "you're so stupid", even if I don't say it to the person outright. I realize it's probably sinful, but I just don't know what to do about it. Feelings of misanthropy and even outright Nihilism are rather regular for me due to plenty of trauma and PTSD.
I don't really get angry, but I do have a bad case of "someone's-wrong-on-the-internet" disease, lol. I deleted GT from my bookmarks years ago, and that helped. I still wander into Politics and News forums, which I should avoid. Always something presented which I want to dispute, and it can cause frustration, if not anger. We just need self-control. Focus mentally on that which is good.

Yea. General Theology? More like General Heresies. Some dude last night had the nerve to claim I don't read the Bible simply because I said that the Pentecostal understanding of what tongues is was unbiblical. The entire argument eventually degraded into us throwing witty retorts at each other. Like, he said I was just cranky because I'm sexually repressed or something from being celibate, lol.

pretty much. I was lambasted for pointing out that the Antichrist has to falsely seem to fulfill the Jewish prophecies concerning the Messiah. so the Antichrist would at least have to claim to be Jewish ethnically. President Obama, being Kenyan on his father's side and European on his mother's side, never made that claim. ergo, not the Antichrist.

That's Sola Scriptura for you. They will claim the Bible says whatever they want it to say, usually something to back up their own personal political views.

Eh. Having had too many imposed "excuses" wrt fasting makes me less inclined to want to accept them for myself. That's just me though. If I didn't have the restrictions I have, I'm quite sure I'd be looking about for all sorts of excuses ...

This is the best advice:

" Praise the God of all, drink the good wine, and let the world be the world" otherwise, you will drive yourself to an early grave.

In terms of trying to change others, you are maybe right.

But it is always worth being changed ourselves when we need it. :)

Anger is astonishingly corrosive. Sometimes I am surprised it didn't consume me completely when I just soaked it in all day, every day.

There are emotional states I would like to talk about with my priest, but can't because I can't describe them.

Hi guys, I wrote on anger and would love some feedback on this post!

God, My Anger, and Me
Hello and welcome to CF and to TAW. :)

I'm a bit short on time (always these days it seems!) ... but I don't think anger itself is necessarily bad, as long as it's rightly placed (against sin, for example). That's what I get out of what you wrote too. Though for the first part of it, I wasn't sure where it would lead. So if those were within your intent, you accomplished it. Sometimes the surprise is what sticks with people. :)

Again welcome - we are glad to have you with us!
