Dids topic of Mere Theism is anathema to me. Seems like you apply it as a pejorative to what you disagree with.

No... it is only perceived that way because (apparently) you identify yourself with the things I am saying. The term "mere theism" is just a term that describes people who believe in God and think that He behaves according to a set of attributes without the additional specifications taught by individuals like Jesus, Mohammad, or Moses. Mere theists define God and His nature by things like "sovereignty" and "God is in control" and even use these principles to overrule the things Jesus said and showed us about the Father. Hence they are Christians who have lapsed back into a mere theistic system.

My dad would say to find out why it bothers you so much, and then settle in your own mind whether the topic actually applies to you. But do not get mad at me because I use the term and you happen to identify yourself with it. I cannot help if you stand up and salute. I honestly do not have your specifically in mind when I use the term. It is just a term like "WOF" or "Charismatic" or "agnostic", and is used far and wide by everyone from C.S. Lewis to the Harvard Professors. It describes a system of belief. In itself there is nothing derogatory about it.
Unless you identify with it that is and apply it to yourself.

I can't keep up!!!!!!

*cries silently*

Don't think linear. And don't be thrown by the phrase 'mere thiesm'. Of the 40,000? people on CF, Dids is the only one who might have some idea of what he is talking about.

I rarely have felt that you were referring to me with that term. But my sense of fairness has felt that you have on occasian used that in a pejorative fashion against people that you disagree with that in their view, scripture bears out their point.

Good post though Dids, thanks for another excellent post.

If this is true then why does the forum name "Charismatic - Non Word of Faith" bother you so much?

You're welcome.

We all disagree about things. If it does not apply, then they can ignore it. If the shoe fits... ride the pumpkin home.

So....

to start a little vocabulary lesson:

a·nath·e·ma –noun, plural -mas. 1.a person or thing detested or loathed: That subject is anathema to him. 2.a person or thing accursed or consigned to damnation or destruction. 3.a formal ecclesiastical curse involving excommunication. 4.any imprecation of divine punishment. 5.a curse; execration.

What subjects are anathema to you?

Universalism? Preterism? Modalism? Monophytism?

No subject is really anathema to me... some beliefs are :)

I know a lot of wof people.
I felt they were being unfairly selected out and excluded based on prejudical logic. So I left choosing not to be a party in such proceedings.
Eventually people caught up with my way of thinking and I heard they are going to change it. So I came back.
Apparently someone agreed?
I did hear some good names being suggested for the forum.
I am glad for them!

Exactly. The term offends you because you think the motive for it is other than the people using it expressed.

That's exactly why your term "mere theism" is offensive to people, even if they don't think your prejudicial logic applies to them... Because of the intent of the person using the term.

I think to judge the intent of a person's heart is beyond our ability.
It says more about the judge than the judged.

This is troubling for me. Why would you so blithely make a statement that you are going to do something you believe to be wrong in the future, when a simple honest decison on your part to not repeat the behaviour would go a long way in preventing a reoccurance?

Don't you believe you have the ability to change your own behaviours?
i.e. Self-control. ;)

Agreed. And I'm sure I have been guilty and will be guilty of it in the future myself.

You either are greedy or you're not, and most of us have been greedy on an occasion or two.;)

Mere theism... by that I mean the tendency among modern churches/Christians after discovering salvation by faith in Christ and His cross, to then digress back into a theological description of God rather than walking by the Jesus revelation of the Father.

Makes a lot of people mad to suggest they are doing this.

Tells me that there much be something to it because so many people shoot back.

I have even been reported for mentioning the term.

Shhhhhhh......
Wow, dids is back, and with his original name too...

I like how you said this, not because I know it to be absolutely true, it could be I don't know, but because I can fit my own statement in the same type of phrase!!! ;)

Here's what I would say...

There's a tendency among modern churches/Christians after discovering salvation by grace through faith in Jesus Christ and His cross, to then digress back into a law and order type existance rather than walking in true grace and a freedom that the Father has provided us. :)

Because I have no confidence in the flesh. I know that I am frail and that I will occasionally give into my flesh. Doesn't mean that I will allow it to reign, but I am not so haughty as to believe I won't give into it.
And you will give in, especially if you're not walking in the Spirit. And that is why God has given us His Spirit, so that we may become victorious over sin in our bodies and soul. This is the whole purpose of Him coming to live inside us. We shouldn't do a thing but obey what the Spirit tells us. What does the Spirit tell you? If what you're hearing is, in the flesh don't do this and don't do that, then that is not The Holy Spirit speaking to you but the enemy. The Holy Spirit will tell you to love and have mercy and do good, that is all. But I digress, the Holy Spirit is the great heart changer, we're not! When we listen to Him, follow Him, and obey Him, He changes us.

Our job is not to work at becoming perfect according to the law but becoming consistantly obedient to the Holy Spirit and to His perfect law of love, mercy, and kindness. So if you're trying to please Him in the flesh, STOP IT, Knock it off, you're wasting your time!!!

Just thought I'd add to your thought...
