An unusual experience in NYC

And you Buzuxi wonder why I love this city. Because there is no greater place in the world.

So on Saturday I got stood up. I really like the guy. His mom got really sick so he forgot. Okay. I cried for a long time, but you know what - I had gotten my hair done and it was not going to waste - I was going out.

So on Sunday after church, with palm leaves in my hand, I went bar hopping solo. Went to 3 different NYC bars, talked to a bunch of different people, socialized, learned so many things, it was great.

The interesting experience was at bar No 3. I was sitting to the right of these two guys. I overheard them have a conversation. I heard the word "God" but did not pay it much attention. Later, the guy to the far left went home, and the guy next to me started talking to me. He said they had had a conversation about faith and sex before marriage. The guy who left was a believing virgin waiting until marriage. He was sharing the difficulty of his struggle. My new friend ("I'm an atheist" in his words) tried to tell him that it was unrealistic, no woman will wait until marriage, and why don't you give up the crazy idea. It has to be a legitimate relationship but no woman will wait until marriage.

And he told me all that, and I'm like: where did that guy go? Can you go find him? I'm the same way! Been married before but not anymore and now I'm waiting!

But it was too late - unfortunately, the two guys had been sitting in the wrong order.

Btw during yesterday's bar hopping session, 3 separate guys told me "I'm an atheist." And I said - I'm already upset, I just got stood up - let's talk about smth else.

You love this city because you got stood up? And instead of observing a palm sunday family tradition you went bar hopping in a city where most people you encounter are atheists (except for the Hindu and muslim immigrants). Did you mean to say why you hate this city? ?? Well I guess to each his own,

I don't hate anything! I'm not a hateful person. :) And my family does not observe Palm Sunday - I'm the only believer in the family.

Im just wondering how your encounter equates to loving this city. It sounded like a dreary day. I can assure you any bar you go to, a guy will strike up a conversation with a single girl drinking on her own in any pub of any city or town.

What a strange way to celebrate Palm Sunday. I'm sorry to hear that you are the only believer in Christ in your family, that must feel lonely especially on holy days. I haven't been a regular visitor in TAW for the last few years, so I may have missed your intro post. How long have you been an Orthodox Christian?

If you go to bars, you'll meet the kind of people... who go to bars.
If you go to libraries, ditto.
If you go to volunteer organizations and events, ditto.

I don't think bar-hopping is liable to lead to meeting serious traditional Christians.

No but it's lots of fun. I'm a sociable person, and out here in North Jersey between working and caring for Grandma I find myself pretty isolated. Hitting the city is my way of getting back in touch with the world.

With Russian families, sometimes it's funny, you've gotta take Communism into consideration. On Dad's side: great Grandma and Grandpa - believers. Grandpa - not a believer, Grandma - a latent believer. (Grandpa was a military officer and could get in trouble for religion.) My Mom and Dad - not believers (they both had Scientific Atheism as a mandatory college class). Me - a believer (not the greatest one but I'm trying).

I agree here. I have struck up more meaningful convos with folks at the coffeeshop at a bookstore than at a bar. not saying bar hopping is bad, but just from my personal experience.

Thanks for sharing, Mariya. So, your parents were not believers, is that right? Are both your parents Russian? Are you first generation American? Were they baptized as infants? And you as well?
