Cool. Implement it and when the data shows it to be working we can get rid of AA.

Working would be the people who achieve those scores get in. So if they screen by those, then it works.

If that results in any ratio of any group, it doesn't matter. It worked in taking the people who met the standard.

discussed on another forum I was a member on
(a forum that owner shut down)

it was said that some Asian kids were trying not to identify themselves on college applications because some colleges had quotas on the no. of Asians admitted

it was then discussed if parents should mark Asian on paperwork when their child begins school as once something is part of school record, it's permanently there
(this was about adopted children so their last name doesn't reflect who they are)

My father legally changed my name when I was 15 because he knew it was too 'black' to use on college admission forms. My name is now sufficiently 'white'.

Affirmative Action and College Admissions
Should racial and ethnic preferences continue?

By Tom Price November 17, 2017 Volume 27, Issue 41

The Supreme Court has upheld the use of race in college admissions, but affirmative action is facing new challenges. Many whites continue to oppose giving preference to minorities to compensate for discrimination and to diversify campuses, and the Trump administration says it may sue universities practicing intentional discrimination. Several critics question affirmative action's effectiveness, citing minorities' continued under-representation at elite universities. But affirmative action's defenders say it has helped raise minority representation on campuses, and that most universities rely on a holistic admissions approach that looks at applicants' public service, creativity and other attributes, as well as race. Georgetown and other schools are pursuing innovative ways to diversify their student bodies, such as admitting the descendants of slaves owned by their institutions. Meanwhile, activist Edward Blum has filed numerous suits challenging laws and policies that favor minorities over whites.

Overview

Abigail Fisher is an unassuming 27-year-old from Sugar Land, Texas, who played the cello and dreamed of attending the University of Texas at Austin, the alma mater of her sister and father.

She also is at the center of a legal storm involving affirmative action. For the past nine years, Fisher has maintained that the university rejected her application in 2008 because she is white, in violation of the U.S. Constitution. Her lawsuit twice landed at the U.S. Supreme Court, most recently producing the landmark 2016 ruling that the school could treat race as a relevant feature within the broader context of a candidate's application.

Nevertheless, Fisher and an advocacy group backing her, Students for Fair Admissions, filed a new lawsuit in late June in state court, arguing that the university's use of racial preferences in admissions violates state law and the Texas Constitution.

The gal who sued on account of not getting admitted to Texas wasn't up to par. Had she been in the top 5% of her class she'd have had far more of a case.

Yes. As I said, implement it and when the data shows it is working we can get rid of AA.

Since you cannot implement it without getting rid of AA, that makes no sense.

stop discrimination to non-minorities.
If a group of people constitute the vast majority of the population and wield the vast majority of political power in a given area, yet choose to enact laws and policies under which they themselves are discriminated against and put at a disadvantage in relation to the minority, would you call that group of people extremely stupid?

Labelling over 50% of population as a minority(women) is weird.
That's true. I mashed them all together. The stats I read actually said 4% minority and .8% women. It is probably good to distinguish the two.

It's not my list, it belongs to the largest American Organization that documents "Hate Groups" In the USA

Southern Poverty Law Center

The very reason we need to expose Black Racist Hate Groups, and do away with Affirmitive Action, stop discrimination to non-minorities.
Do you mean actual discrimination of non-minorities or change the perception of "White Privilege?" Because you can rest assured, white males are hired at a higher rate than any other race when qualifications are equal. They are also paid more, and are promoted faster than minorities with the same level of experience and education so where are you finding the information that white males are being discriminated against? I'm sure it has happened, however not to any real measurable amount.

While up until 1864, America employed slavery based on racial discrimination to provide itself with free labor.

And, even after slaves were freed, they weren't given the rights of free citizens until the 1960's or so.

That's almost 200 years worth of significant racial discrimination.

That's what programs like Affrimative Action are designed to correct ...

Except today, affirmative action is not used exclusively for the benefit of blacks but a wide range of minorities, some of which were not handicapped historically like blacks. These other minorities benefitting from AA, in comparison to blacks, have done very well in U.S. in terms of social movement, wealth, and income.

This renders your justification for AA, a justification rooted in 200 years of discrimination against blacks, to be a very lacking justification.

Yet study after study show that people of color continue to be underrepresented. What is your plan for ensuring this equity you claim to be ideal is put into practice in reality?

You’ll need to define “people of color.”

Racism knows no bounds and is displayed, by people of all types and colors.
True statement. I think what people take issue with is that due to the history of this country and who has controlled the government, all industries, and real estate since forcing out and killing the native population is only one particular group of people. This can negatively impact the other groups of people if certain members of that first group who are in control use it to continue to advance only their own groups's lives. The other groups are then left with the scraps. AA is an attempt to allow the "other groups" entry into the "First Group's" industries so that they may also be allowed to prosper and not be remanded to only the scraps that fall off of the first group's table

Admission should be based on GPA and test scores. All other criteria are subjective and subject to abuse.

So no attention to just what classes one received those grades in? Thankfully there are almost no colleges that stupid. College admission departments know a 'C' in calculus is worth far more than an 'A' in 'practical math for high school'. Same for Physics vrs. 'Advanced physical science' (or whatever the class created for non-academics to fulfil a hard science requirement for graduation is there days).

Making admission decisions on just hard numbers would be acceptable if high schools were comparable. They are not. An elite private school, a good public school, an inner city public school and a small rural high school are all different and simply comparing grades is a fool's folly. Adjusting GPA by giving a point for AP or honors classes is fair for deciding between students who had access to such classes. It is not fair to students who had no such opportunities.

Trying to compare students from strikingly different backgrounds means those making the comparisons need as much data as possible. That includes GPA and test scores. It also includes classes taken, class rank, extra curricular activities (which should include having a job to help the family survive), recommendations and essays required as part of the application. And especially interviews.

I excelled in some and did ok in others. Some would fare badly in trying to guess which were my strongest points.

Why those who are under represented of course. So yellow is no longer a color and somehow brown or black is not a color when it comes to Indians (the kind from India).

Students going to college would take pre-college classes. Basing admission on extra curricular activities, interviews, and recommendations is subjective. It has created paid admission consultants for the benefit of students who can afford them though.

Anyone read the book, “Race and Culture,” by Thomas Sowell? I’ve read the book. Great book. I highly recommend the book, but I digress.

A suggestion of the book is a particular socialization within the black community is a contributing factor to blacks being underrepresented in colleges, universities, and executive levels of businesses, etcetera. He makes a rather compelling argument in support of this view.

You seem to have this idea that subjective criteria are per se bad. That is not the case.

And while there is a market for paid admission consultants there is a far larger and older one for test preparation.

I don't agree. GPA scores aren't the only things that make for good students or good citizens.
