OK. Heres the plan, and we'll see if this works

What this thread is

This is a thread where, Adventists, post their biblically backed up thoughts on the Sabbath. There will be a topic set in this post, the OP. What you do, is you post your thoughts (with biblical evidence) on the subject. Everyone once in awhile, say, every week, the topic will change. I will edit this post to show at what page number the topics started to be discussed and at what page number that stopped, so people can refer to it for reference.

An example of topics could include;
  • What day is the sabbath?
  • What is its purpose?
  • How was in kept in the OT?
  • How is it kept in the NT?
  • Apologetics on the subject of it
This way, it'll be like, combining all of our knowledge and thoughts into one thread that we could perhaps look back at.

What this thread is not
  • Not a debate thread. Don't agree with someone? Do not post that. Keep it to yourself. Instead, post what you believe.
  • Not a social thread. Social threads are great, but this is a combined bible study where we post on different aspects of the Sabbath.
CURRENT TOPIC

What is the Sabbath day? (E.g. what day is it, what is it? Is it a holiday? A celebration?)

The Sabbath in written form is defined in the fourth commandment which can be found in Exodus 20:8-11.

8 “ Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the LORD your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.

The first mention of a specific day of "rest" in the Bible is found here.

Genesis 2:2 - And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.

Genesis 2:3 - And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.

Plus, if course there's the other Exodus verses not mentioned above:

Exodus 20:9 - Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work:

Exodus 20:10 - But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates:

Exodus 20:11 - For in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.

Also, note the recognition of the first day of the week being right after the Sabbath in Mark:

Mark 16:1 - And when the sabbath was past, Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James, and Salome, had bought sweet spices, that they might come and anoint him.

Mark 16:2 - And very early in the morning the first day of the week, they came unto the sepulchre at the rising of the sun.

Not to mention how many languages refer to the seventh day as some form of the word "Sabbath". ;)

Blessings and Love,
Sarah
