Just a thought...

I wonder if a space was created on the forum for folks to dialogue who don't use pseudonyms as a cover, so that those who participate are then accountable for their posts.

As it stands members make all sorts of inappropriate posts with no risk of their personal reputation being harmed as they hide behind their anonymity.

Interesting you bring this up. Recently I have been targeted with threats and I wonder if it is because I am fully transparent on the internet. That being said, I don't live in fear but I can understand why people would hide their identity for this very reason.
Blessings

There is concern that the use of screen names in social media has given rise to bulk abuse and no accountability or threat to reputation.

Could we not lead the way here and establish a more safe environment where real names are required ?

Well the Lt. Governor of a state running for office sure got schooled on posting what he thought was anonymous. I don't use my name but I still have to assume that those of us that post personal stuff could easily be tracked or even just identified with a profile that would probably lead to an ID.

I'm not sure I get this. Members are accountable for their posts regardless of the handle they're using. A pseudonym has never been a cover for someone to make inappropriate posts on a forum that's as heavily moderated as this one is.

The only reason I use my name in transliterated Russian is that it is always already taken in English. It's not to hide from or not take responsibility for anything I post. I am also of the age that I more or less grew up before the internet, and certainly before the rise of social media (ex. I didn't have a Myspace account until friends of mine set one up for me so that we could have a way to stay in touch while I was away at college in my mid-20s; though I guess maybe this is not a good example anymore, because now nobody has a Myspace account :)), so the idea of sharing too much online seems weird to me. I try to be somewhat strategic about anything that could lead to me being found in real life, just out of general safety concerns.

But I'll stand behind anything I post. Or perhaps it's better said that I wouldn't post anything I'm not willing to defend.

I even think that some of the screen names and avatars chosen are designed to intimidate.
I could post a pretty intimidating looking selfie. And my name is extremely common.

Here's a selfie I've used as an avatar before. And my name is Brian Kelly. Good luck with Googling that. You'll mostly get hits for Notre Dame's football coach.

You are not anonymous on the internet and I mentioned this recently. Your identity is cloaked at the user level but can be unveiled behind the scenes as we've noticed through law enforcement. Private parties can do the same and it usually results in doxxing.

It's best to exercise discrimination all around. You don't know who's reading your comments or how they'll respond. Some topics are best left untouched. Particularly those that are emotionally charged and likely to attract the wrong people.

Perhaps. But there's millions of people who make themselves very public on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Youtube etc. And those people getting attacked by a random stranger must be pretty rare. I've certainly never heard of it. You probably have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning on a clear day.

One instance is too much. We have a member acknowledging the same on this thread. No one should be harassed. Nor will I minimize its seriousness irrespective of the number.

what difference would it make if a person uses their real name or not? In regards to this forum there are rules ... whatever name one uses we are supposed to abide by the rules of the various forums. The moderators do their best to see that the forum rules are upheld. If one feels something is an inappropriate post they can notify the moderators of such.

Interesting thought. I used my nickname and last two initials. If someone were interested in finding out my real name they could do so, but for the sake of my immediate family, I would prefer simply to make it difficult (though not impossible) to find out my name. It is unique and I get plenty of spam emails and calls as it is.

I'm not sure if there would be much of a change in abuse or reputation if one were called Fred Jones or Aardvark. Either name, one would still know the type of person they are.

This can happen on PM - I am not sure if the Mods would see this?

I takes some time for the Mod's to sort matters out and harm can already be afflicted.
