  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.
  • We hope the site problems here are now solved, however, if you still have any issues, please start a ticket in Contact Us

So everyone has heard of the flat earth society, but on a whim tonight I decided to search out their website and read most of it. Some of the stuff on there is really fantastic.

The Flat Earth Society

They claim for example that there are no satellites.

My first thought was "well how do GPS systems work"

But that was quickly answered in their FAQ "pseudolites" (which remain completely unexplained, presumably some kind of long range radio tower) do their job. And when navigating airplane flights they purposefully warp and twist the routes to make travel times seem longer and shorter to fit the world wide conspiracy.

Really, it doesn't get any better than this. I recommend it for some light and humorous reading.

Flat Earth Society said:
The Sun's area of light is limited to a circular area of light upon the earth much like the light of a lighthouse is limited to a circular area. This means that only certain portions of the Earth are lightened at a time. It also describes how night and day arise in Flat Earth. The apparent view of rising and setting are caused by perspective, just as a flock of birds overhead will descend into the horizon as they fly into the distance.

Someone should tell them the visual effect on the flock of birds is due to a spherical earth. That'd be funny to watch.

Their "pseudo-satellites" have been described as a network of radio towers transmitting satellite information. One time, on their forum, I tried to explain the problems with a
line-of-sight network like the one described but they eventually closed the thread.

Yeah, when one of their (actual) reasons for why a round earth couldn't exist is that you'd fall off the bottom, I wouldn't expect any sort of reasoned argument about radio towers getting through to them.

Welcome to the forums by the way, hope you stick around.

Silly people. Everyone knows that gravity is just a mass delusion, and that if we all stopped believing in the delusion then we would all go flying into space.

Indeed I am, and since you did not put a smiley in your post, under Poe's, it is impossible to tell if you were serious or not.
Did you take Mr. Poe seriously when he didn't include a smiley in his original post?

I've noticed that, too.

Despite being the author of the law that bears his name, I've yet to see him use it.

I have noticed that some of the people there seem almost too absurd to be serious. That being said, that's an awful lot of effort put in to Poe the world. I can see coming up with a website or something static like that, but maintaining a forums and writing newsletters just to Poe people seems a bit over the top. I mean, you'd have to be really dedicated, not to mention the fact that it seems to have a pretty long history.

Has someone looked into the veracity of their organization's historical claims? Are they really a left-over from some other group?
