  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I just can't see how belief is not a choice. Belief is something we accept as fact or not regardless of whether it is or not, how is that not a choice?

It's not a choice because no conscious decision was made.

For example, I never chose not to believe in the existence of God. I realized only in hindsight that I no longer held that belief. I was persuaded in my reflection on the issue that the case for the existence of God was deficient, but I did not "choose" to be persuaded, I simply was.

No one does...

As incredible as it may sound, solipsists (or very near solipsists) do exist. They are typically Idealists who reject the idea of a material world, and believe that there is only one conscious entity ("God") in existence that is indistinguishable from any conscious individual, individuality being seen as an "illusion".

Sometimes I am close to phenomenalism. There are appearances to mind and memories which are all I can truly know. This is often a response to the religious attitude that goes to the other extreme and posits knowledge of grand, transcendental metaphysical edifices. Bewildernent leads me to seek security of confidence. Home may not be sweet but at least it provides an accurate map, or reliable elements.
