  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Okay so a few books on my list are these:

The Glass Castle by Jeanette Walls
The Woman in Cabin 10 by Ruth Ware
The Man from Beijing by Henning Mankell
Orphan Train by Christina Kline
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
Fearless by Eric Blehm
Sybil by Flora Rheta Schreiber

I think I have like 130 on my list, haha. So much so that I forget a lot of what they're about. :sorry:

I have never heard of any of these books, at least I don't think. I'll have to look them up to see if I'll add them to my list...which I still need to start working on!

I will probably participate. I have a very long reading list and haven't been getting as much in lately. Plus, I promised @kittysbecute I would read some books she likes.

So I've decided my goal will be 25 books for 2018, but each month we have it set up where a lady from our local library stops by and we get and return books and dvds, and she comes each month, sometimes twice a month. So what I'm going to start doing is requesting 5 books per month. So we'll see how that goes.

The first 5 books I'll be requesting is:

Fearless by Eric Blehm - It's a true story about a navy seal.
The Silent Wife by A.S.A. Harrison
The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena
Color by Victoria Finlay - Non-fiction, I'm really looking forward to this one!
My Life in France by Julia Child - Bio

I worked out my list today... I looked through the array of books I have and haven't read and choose 24 books out of that. I hope to read more than that, because I used to read a book every few days, and finally make a dent in my pile of unread books but my minimum goal is 24.

All of the required reading from college and seminary really seemed to slow me down and in some sense it has taken some of the enjoyment I used to have in reading. Hopefully with this challenge some of that will change.

Required reading is definitely not as fun as reading for enjoyment. I hope you discover some really fun books. :)
I'm going with 24 as my goal as well because for 2017 my goal was 12 and that was too easy. Two books a month seems reasonable. :) (I am probably going to be counting any books I'm required to read for school to make up for any months that I have too much required reading to make time for fun reading. Most classes in this program require reading articles rather than books though so far.)

I'm going to set my goal at 30 books. I actually read more than that last year and this year, but if I'm going to set a specific target then I'll go for something slightly lower just to give me a bit of leeway in case something happens and I end up not reading as much as I want to.

That's a good goal!

I already have my first 3 books. I should be getting 2 more later this month though.

I'm going to start a book my mother recommended. It's called, "Memoirs of an Imaginary Friend" by Matthew Dicks.

My mother described it as a story about a five year old suspected of having Asperger's as told from the perspective of the child's imaginary friend. His abilities are limited by the child's imagination and creativity and he tries to help the child through life.

That sounds really good. I think I'll put that on my to read list as well

I’m making my reading list now and there are a number of books that I’ve been wanting to reread, so I think I’m going to include those in my goal. :)
