  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

It's 2018, so time to start the reading challenge. Book #1 is The Return of Sherlock Holmes by Arthur Conan Doyle.

Ooh excellent choice!

I'm reading Colors by Victoria Finlay. It's like a history of colors. She's traveled so many places and has so many stories about where certain colors originated from and what lengths people went to to get these colors. Also stories about what happen to people if they didn't use the right colors. It's very interesting.

So far I'm reading about "ochre" and she tells a story about East Point Beach in Darwin, Australia. About how the beaches are lined with this color:

Well, I finished my first book of the year, North and South by Gaskell. Technically it was from December but I knew I wouldn't finish it in time so I put it on my book list for this year and I finally finished it today. I must say the ending was so pleasant that it was worth wading through some of the slower parts of the book. I think it is a lovely book, wonderful characters, and a very happy ending.

I can't remember if I've read that book all the way to the end.. so I think I will add that to my list. :) Even if I have read it, it will be nice to reread. :)

Just preserver until the end, the ending is slightly different than the BBC series and was very sweet or at least I thought so.

I finished reading A Necessary Spectacle today. Next might be 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea until one of the books I recently ordered online arrives.

Did you enjoy the book? Was it something you had read before or was this your first time diving into it?

It was good. I'd be willing to read it again, but I've learned a lesson about never buying used books on Amazon. It wasn't in mint condition when I got it, so I'll have to watch for that in the future.

Has anyone ever done a reading challenge before? Whether it be from the popsugar website, or goodreads, or... well I've searched it on google and there's a lot of different "reading challenges" out there. But they usually start on the first day of the year and you make a goal of how many books you want to read for the year and then at the end of the year see how many you ended up reading.

I'm thinking of doing a reading challenge for 2018, and just making a goal number of books I'd like to read and just see what I can do. :) I'm going to keep track on GoodReads. So if anyone else would like to make a goal too and keep track in this thread, that could totes be doable and I think it would be fun to have multiple people involved. We could tell what we're reading currently.

If not, no worries. I might just post in here to keep track of my goal and tell what I'm reading, you can actually join in any time next year, you don't actually have to start on Jan 1st. :)

My sister actually just recommended the Goodreads challenge to me. She's an avid reader (even has a social media presence that revolves around reading/writing). I just started Lexicon by Max Barry, and have about a half-dozen other books stacked up by my bed that I need to get to as well. This will be a handy tool to keep me focused.

Thanks to some of you I'm listening to the audiobook of North and South, read by Juliet Stevenson. :D

Also I'm still reading Colors by Victoria Finlay. I might also start in on the book Fearless tomorrow.

I like starting a lot of books at the same time just to keep my brain entertained, lol. If I focus on just one book I get bogged down as if if I don't finish it, I won't start anymore. :p

@Fenwick awesome! You'll have to let us know how you like the book and other books you start to read. :D

I used to have a Goodreads account, but abandoned it long ago.

What are your favorite mystery thriller authors?

I really enjoy Paula Hawkins, Joy Fielding, Sue Grafton, Dennis Lehane, and Henning Mankell are a few that I can think of off the top of my head. I can give recommendations of specific books if you like too.

Yes, I would like that.

I really enjoyed Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins... She has a new book called Into The Water which is on my to read list, I hope it's as good as her first one. :)

Someone is Watching by Joy Fielding is by far my favorite book by her, but honestly might be my favorite book in general. Other books by her that I found interesting and entertaining were: "Now You See Her", and "Mad River Road"

You can't really go wrong, in my opinion, with Sue Grafton.. Any of her "Alphabet Mystery" books are all good, in my opinion. The first one is A is for Alibi. :)

For Dennis Lehane.. I enjoyed Shutter Island (I didn't even know it was a book at first!), Mystic River, Since We Fell, and Gone Baby Gone are really good ones. :)

Thanks! I looked into Joy Fielding and I think I might try Missing Pieces.
