How about U.S. Grant? All the 'classy' generals before him were flops on the battlefield.
Not necessarily. Consider Grant's opposition. Robert E. Lee, by everything I've read, was a consummate gentleman--a decent and honorable man, and a real class act in most all respects. He mistakenly fought for a losing cause, and his army inevitably ran out of steam. But he was without question a brilliant battlefield tactician. And was nearly worshipped by his men.
