Actually spiritual gifts, including prophecy, are given to us by God to comfort us. Have a look at 1 Corinthians chapters 12-14.
Apostles, Prophets, Pastors, Teachers, and Evangelists are intended for the work of the ministry. That is God's plan for us. These ministries and gifts are used by God
Ephesians 4:11-12
11. And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;
12. For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:
Indeed. Note that none of this is an excuse to be heedless, however, so any claimed prophet had best have the contents of their prophecies vetted by the Church, which is also in keeping with scripture (see the reply I just wrote to the other poster).
I think it is immature to presume that you have been given the gift of prophecy, which is what this thread is about. Failed prophets are obviously wrong in their view of themselves as prophets, so someone in this situation is not actually following God, and it's not God Himself.These are all gifts and ministry gifts are God's way of achieving maturity of the body. It is not immature to do and seek God's methods and plan.
The gifts are also God's way of creating equity in the body, so all the self declared "smart people" do not take over and lord it over the rest.
I don't see anything in these verses, or in the OP, or in any post in this thread about "self declared 'smart people'" taking over anything or lording anything over anyone.
So as for me, despite the problems we see, I will stick with God's plan. Give me a poor prophet over a prideful intellectual any day!
Sure, but this thread is about people who think/thought they are prophets but are proven wrong when their prophecies don't come to pass. It's not really about who's poor or who's an intellectual or whatever. (Unless I just don't understand the OP...I don't think that's what we're supposed to be talking about in this thread, anyway.)
