  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

I agree, but I'm still going to use fairy tales :)
In that case, you won't be surprised if others of us respond to you accusing people of telling fairy tales in the same way as we would if you said what you really meant and called them liars.

Flatearthbanjo had to mirror this from Adams Truth Channel (after getting his permission). An amazing interview with a FLAT EARTHER International Commercial Pilot. YES, pilots know some things aren't quite right as they ought to be on a globe model. Yes, New Zealand pilots CAN'T ask questions or are just TOO SCARED to ask them. This and MUCH MORE.

Notes
18 days’ layover, maintenance. From Oakland to Miami AE and Fred were accompanied by AE’s husband, George Palmer Putnam, and her mechanic R.D. “Bo” McKneeley. Repairs following AE's aborted first world flight attempt in March had been completed on May 18 and this was a shakedown flight. It was not until they arived in Miami that the announcement was made that the second world flight attempt had actually begun. In Miami, Pan American Airways mechanics made necessary adjustments, then AE and Fred continued on alone.Back.

6One day layover; maintenance. Back.
7For the first time in the flight, weather became a serious problem. Originally intending only to refuel at Akyab, heavy rain forced them to abort their attempt to continue. Another attempt to reach Bangkok the next day was cut short by severe weather and a landing was made at Rangoon. Back.
8Unscheduled; weather. Back.
9Refuel only. Back.
10Two days’ layover; maintenance. Instrument malfunctions were addressed by mechanics of KLM East Indies Airlines. In a telephone conversation with her husband, AE said she still hoped to be home by July 4th. Back.

YES, pilots know some things aren't quite right as they ought to be on a globe model. Yes, New Zealand pilots CAN'T ask questions or are just TOO SCARED to ask them. This and MUCH MORE.

Here we have one pilot who was willing to talk.

From AI

While the overwhelming majority of commercial pilots confirm and operate based on the Earth's spherical shape, a small number of individuals who identify as commercial pilots have claimed to believe in a flat Earth
. These beliefs are widely considered a part of a conspiracy theory and are contrary to established aviation principles and standard flight operations.

Aviation Industry Perspective
  • Universal Use of Globe Model: All flight planning software, navigation systems, and maps (such as the Lambert Conformal Conic projection) used in commercial and military aviation are fundamentally based on a spherical Earth model.
  • Great Circle Routes: Pilots use "Great Circle Routes" for long-distance flights because they are the shortest distance between two points on a sphere. These routes are nonsensical on a flat-earth map and would lead to wildly incorrect destinations.
  • Pilot Consensus: The vast majority of professional pilots find the flat Earth concept absurd, often laughing when asked seriously about it. They point to their real-world experience of flying around the globe, which would be impossible if it were flat.
  • Professional Debunkers: Several active and retired commercial pilots, such as the Australian pilot behind the "Wolfie6020" YouTube channel, actively create content to debunk flat Earth claims using aviation facts and logic.

Noteworthy Individuals
There have been occasional anecdotes and claims online about pilots who hold flat Earth beliefs:
  • Anonymous Accounts: In online forums like Reddit and Facebook, some people have shared stories about flying with a captain or an "old timer" regional pilot who advocated for the flat Earth theory, sometimes suggesting they had "lost their mind".
  • Unlicensed Advocates: While there are individuals who make flat Earth claims, there is a lack of verifiable evidence of any commercial pilot holding an Airline Transport Pilot License (ATPL)—the highest level of pilot certification—who is willing to publicly debate or demonstrate their beliefs using professional credentials. Challenges issued by qualified pilots for an ATPL-rated flat Earth pilot to step forward have gone unanswered.
In summary, any claim of a "flat Earth commercial pilot" refers to a rare anecdotal occurrence rather than a common or professionally accepted phenomenon within the aviation industry, which operates exclusively on the principles of a spherical Earth.

Typical, but this can't be said for the pilot in the video.

Sure it can. Given the fact that all pilots use the great circle routes and that all software works with a spherical earth and does not work with a flat earth then the only possible conclusion is that the person being interviewed either has mental health issues or is not really a pilot.

The pilot in the video is not saying he doesn't.

Typical answer

Here we have a video of emergency flight landings which makes no sense on a globe but makes perfect sense on a flat earth map.

Can @prodromos please explain this ?
Sure, I can explain this, but will it make any difference to you?
The first thing you do when people claim to be plotting flight paths on a globe is to go to greatcirclemap.com and confirm whether they are telling the truth. It turns out your youtuber is only capable of drawing lines that follow the lines of latitude whereas international flights all take great circle routes.
So here are the flights on a globe:
1000035687.jpg

1000035690.jpg

1000035693.jpg

Those red lines are the shortest routes on a globe. I'll leave it up to you to figure out where Alaska and Moscow are on those maps.
You could have easily fact checked the video yourself and saved yourself the embarrassment of posting yet another stupid video that makes false claims to try and falsify the globe. Maybe think about doing that in the future.

If your globes are correct, where did they make the emergency landings ? That was the question.

If they had an emergency coming from Islamabad why did they carry on to London ?

What exactly did you find amazing about the interview? I read through the transcript and it was a whole lot of nothing. Regular commercial flights to Antarctica didn't start until when this 'interview' took place, so the pilot can be forgiven for that, but it is false that the passenger windows cause curvature (when on the ground, straight lines stay straight). Also, none of the great circle routes take you over Antarctica. One gets close, but it is absolutely false to claim the shortest routes would go over Antarctica.
Lots of nonsense in that video but that is par for the course for flat earthers.

Yes I did, now show me on your globe where they had stop for their emergency landings.
If you had watched the video then you would know that the cross Pacific flights landed in Alaska and the cross Europe flights landed in Moscow. Here, I'll give you a map with where those two cities are located.
1000035696.jpg

I apologise that greatcirclemap.com doesn't plot individual cities. You have to choose a start and destination.

[Edit] I've just figured out I can use the same city for start and end and it will mark it on the map [edit]

Yes when I watched it, it would have been easier & quicker for this fight to have landed in Hawaii.

I cannot explain this video. It is beyond stupid.

I cannot explain how someone who has a globe in front of him still cannot see the shortest route between two points. It's not that difficult to do: just get a length of string and pull it tight between the two cities. The question: is this guy deliberately trying to deceive? Or does he genuinely not understand (I'm trying to be kind)?

I think he is just repeating what he has seen on another flat earth video. @contratodo had linked one on another thread which used an early Google Maps to plot the globe paths, but that version of Google Maps didn't do Great Circle routes. I seem to recall it did a straight line on a latitude/longitude grid then mapped that to the globe which is completely wrong. Lazy programming.
