  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Ursula von der Leyen’s plane hit by suspected Russian GPS interference

Officials suspect jamming operation forced jet carrying European Commission president to land in Bulgaria using paper maps

“The whole airport area GPS went dark,” said one of the officials. After circling the airport for an hour, the plane’s pilot took the decision to land the plane manually using analogue maps, they added. “It was undeniable interference.” The Bulgarian Air Traffic Services Authority confirmed the incident in a statement to the Financial Times. “Since February 2022, there has been a notable increase in [GPS] jamming and recently spoofing occurrences,” it said. “These interferences disrupt the accurate reception of [GPS] signals, leading to various operational challenges for aircraft and ground systems.”

I wonder how long the West will tolerate provocations? From lies about covid, air balloons, spies captured, undersea cables broken, ramming ships, laser lights and GPS jamming, air space incursions. The list is piling up. What can be done? Here is a possible list for Russia.

Embargo Russia completely,
Refuse to allow ships carrying Russian oil to dock. (many of these tankers are Greek or other nations transporting Russian oil)
Do something to stop Russian travel. No visas even for tourists. Recall EU passport holders living in Russia. Make it a crime to travel there.
Crimp further the assets and the international transactions of Russia.
Is there a way to cut off their connectivity to the rest of the world on the internet?
Let them know that any provocation like flying too close to EU planes or in EU airspace would be met with forceful response.
Let Ukraine attack Russia where ever they like.

Military response could be counterproductive or even dangerous.

Increasing sanctions and putting international pressure on Russia seems the only practical step, even then, the effect will be limited as Russia has significant industrial capacity.

Yes, it is a fine line between doing too little and inviting aggression and doing too much that you start a wider war. I guess my argument is that the West is doing too little. There are some more things that could be done that are short of entering the conflict. I agree that the economic stuff could be much more restrictive.

I think that's a false dichotomy. "Doing too little" may already be enough. With the social and economic situation in Russia, things aren't looking promising for the Putin regime long term. Putin plays up a tough guy image, but that's only because Russia's material situation is quite dire.

Praise God that the plane landed safely.
