Heat indices could hit 120 as sweltering temperatures grip eastern half of US

Parts of Mississippi and Louisiana are on alert for heat indices up to 120 degrees.

On Sunday, Tampa, Florida, broke an all-time heat record -- reaching 100 degrees for the first time in 130 years of record-keeping. [So not the record for today's date, but ever.]

The thing to watch is humidity - do they have a 'wet-bulb' index in the reporting yet?
I am still stunned that 'wet-bulb' heatwaves are not a regular part of our climate reporting and warnings.
Have you all read Kim Stanley Robinson's Ministry for the Future?
The opening chapter is free online.
Forget sea level rise, crop failures increasing later in the century, etc.
The world's first big wet-bulb event over a significantly populated area will send shockwaves through the global culture.
The only other thing I can think of that might compete in the short term is if a new super-pandemic emerges from the Siberian permafrost? But that's harder to prove, and deniers gotta deny.
A wet-bulb event is a direct impact.
Millions could die.

Yes - an oldie - but a goodie.

As the massive heat differential between the equator and north pole reduces, apparently the jet stream is not as firmly locked in place. A warming planet with complex oceanic and atmospheric head distribution and wind systems has weird side effects. The jet stream wobbles. Arctic air gets dumped over North America much later in winter than it used to. A warming world can appear to have some 'cold spots'. To which the climate scientists say:-
