Too little too late. It is becoming perfectly clear that many of the republicans do not like what is going on in their party but are too weak to actually stand up for what they believe. They lack conviction and honor, and the country suffered due to their weakness.

They are trying to slowly distance themselves from the GOP and looking for the sweet spot where they are far enough away to not take shrapnel if the party collapses but close enough to stay in its good graces if it survives. I’ve even seen it in message boards with people who clearly support Trump are saying they aren’t a Trump supporter when pushed on it but then immediately going back to carrying water for Trump afterwards.

Your country has suffered as a result. And the rest of us look on helplessly.

They should speak out now and bring down the rotten edifice of the Trump Faction. It is the way to retrieve the Republican Party from the idiotic sect currently controlling it.

We hope they can fix it. Right now the reasonable faction is just running away. They are on the verge of losing control of the House due to attrition. They will have to fall further before they become legitimate again.

A period in opposition would be therapeutic.

To keep this thread on its main track, the crimes and criminals of Jan 6th...

Jan. 6 defendant who was the subject of a conspiracy theory pleads guilty

Rally Runner, formerly known as Daniel Donnelly Jr., pleaded guilty to one count of civil disorder, which carries a maximum penalty of five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and up to three years supervised release.

A lawyer representing several Capitol riot defendants falsely claimed on Tucker Carlson’s former Fox News show in 2021 that Runner was “clearly a law enforcement officer“ and an “agent provocateur” who had disguised himself as a Trump fan to smear the former president’s supporters.

(Yes, he really did change his name to match his moniker as an unofficial St. Louis Cardinals "mascot" who would run around the stadium to "rally" the team.)

Tonight on Tucker Carlson: How can a Cardinals fan be a Trump fan? It was all a false flag disguise.

‘What is the definition of a domestic terrorist’: Man who admitted to spraying officers with ‘bear mace’ during Capitol riots done in by post-Jan. 6 searches

Thomas Andrew Casselman, 30, entered his guilty plea to a felony offense of assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers. He is set to be sentenced on July 18.

In addition to searching domestic terrorist definitions online, he also sought out legal information such as “The statute of limitations for assault on a police officer,” “The statute of limitations for assault on a federal officer,” “assaulting a federal officer punishment,” and “How long does Verizon keep text messages” before the FBI arrested him on March 28, 2023.

Mr. Runner (his real name now) is one of those Trump supporting participants in Jan 6th that some Trump-supporting media (like Tucker) and some Jan 6th defense attorneys have "done dirty" by spinning conspiracies about them. Only that one old man we shall not name has probably been done dirty worse than Mr. Runner by those looking to generate "alternative theories" to the reality of Jan 6th. I find myself having more pity for Mr. Runner than nearly anyone else charged or IDed at the Capitol on Jan 6th committing crimes.

Well, he might not be the sharpest knife in the box, but he did assault police officers.

He was never charged with assault, though he was in the tunnel area pushing in the crowd and blocking.

‘There seems to be a serial delay’: Attorney discipline board upbraids pro-Trump lawyer Jeffrey Clark in order setting ethics hearing schedule over 2020 subversion efforts

Former U.S. Department of Justice attorney Jeffrey Clark will face disciplinary proceedings in January 2024 over his efforts to help Donald Trump overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election, the board overseeing his professional misconduct case ruled Tuesday.
Speaking of delays, now it's March, but the hearings are live. Or I guess it was yesterday.

Trump ally Jeffrey Clark disciplinary hearing begins over role trying to overturn 2020 election

Hamilton Fox III, the disciplinary counsel at the hearing, said the letter [a draft to be sent to Georgia asking them to void Biden's win in the state] and Clark’s continued attempts to intercede on Trump’s behalf, including multiple meetings with Trump in violation Justice Department procedure, were “essentially a coup attempt at the Department of Justice.”

Eastman Preliminarily Found Culpable in California Bar Trial

After 32 days of testimony, Judge Yvette Roland made “a preliminary finding of culpability,” saying the case will “move forward with not only rebuttal testimony but aggravation.”

The California Supreme Court makes the ultimate decision over lawyer admission and discipline, including disbarment, suspension, or other forms of punishment

Judge recommends ex-Trump election lawyer John Eastman be disbarred

Judge Yvette Roland’s opinion comes after a lengthy trial about Eastman’s actions as he led some of the efforts for Donald Trump to challenge his 2020 election loss.

'Sovereign citizen' Jan. 6 rioter gets seven years for leading mob assault on officers

Taylor James Johnatakis represented himself at trial and would not concede that he was subject to the laws of the United States.

Taylor James Johnatakis was convicted in November on felony counts of obstruction of an official proceeding, assaulting officers and civil disorder, as well as four misdemeanor charges.

Judge Royce Lamberth, who was appointed to the bench by former President Ronald Reagan, said at the sentencing hearing on Wednesday that he was troubled by Johnatakis' "lack of remorse" and he was concerned that, if given the chance, Johnatakis might engage in violence again.

Justice official Clark violated ethics in aiding Trump, D.C. Bar panel finds

A D.C. Bar committee ruled Thursday that former Justice Department official Jeffrey Clark violated at least one rule of ethics and should face professional sanctions for trying to use the department’s influence to help reverse President Donald Trump’s 2020 election defeat. The discipline could include revocation of his D.C. law license, blocking him from practicing law in the nation’s capital.

Thursday’s decision on Clark by the three-person committee is preliminary. It came after seven days of testimony from former senior Justice Department officials who said Clark went against department findings when he drafted a letter that he wanted the Justice Department to send to Georgia officials, demanding that the state legislature call a special session to examine presidential votes in the state.
