President Biden will move to get an assault weapons ban passed while Democrats still remain in control of the House during Congress’ lame-duck session.

Mr. Biden told reporters he would try to “get rid of assault weapons” while answering questions during his Thanksgiving holiday in Nantucket, Massachusetts.

“The idea [that] we still allow semi-automatic weapons to be purchased is sick. Just sick. It has no, no social redeeming value. Zero. None. Not a single solitary rationale for it except profit for the gun manufacturers,” Mr. Biden said.

I don't see that as a big issue. All the guns I have will be legal, and since a slippery slope is a fallacy and not a necessity, what's the issue?

Yeah, talk like that will cause a run on those kinds. Why? I don't know. People love their guns in an inordinate way. It's almost religious.

Instead of spreading the Good Book to control the population, he tries to take away another freedom. Obviously he has never been hunting, or faced a charging animal where semi automatic firearms come in handy. Maybe he should call Ted Nugent!

One cannot spread what one does not have. We should pray for him in that regard. Really, we should pray for all our leaders in that regard.

The big issue is this:

"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed."

Like it or not, that's what it says, and like it or not, at the time, militia duty was like jury duty: membership wasn't optional. That also meant federalizing militias was a form of the draft, but at the moment, that's a rabbit trail.

The most honest way to deal with this would be through a constitutional amendment. Granted that requires an honest politician, something that seems to be most rare, but that point still remains.

Another point is to ask Canadians about that slippery slope. They seem to be going through it.

The last point is what constitutes an assault weapon. Like a Bowie knife, there's no hard definition. Are all semi-automatic weapons, firearms that load but do not continuously fire, assault weapons? That includes hunting weapons that's been around nearly a century, and pistols that use an action that's over a century old now. If you define an assault weapon by how it looks, that's meaningless. As a case in point, look for the "Hello Kitty" AR-15, an AR-15 that complied with then California law, and was done in a "Hello Kitty" motif.

Some of them seemed very keen to join in on an insurrection to support their favourite politician who lost a free and fair election.

An armed population leads to a very high gun death rate as they go around killing each other, especially wives and girlfriends.

Yeah, they do. America is right now marching in the direction of religious authoritarianism while being more more armed than ever.

Thankfully the mid terms have shown us that there may be a chance of America becoming a normal western democracy and not entering a political dark age.

If you don't have a definition of an assault weapon, then it's meaningless to talk of banning them. You must have a clear idea of what you want to ban. For instance, you wrote "Start with AR 15 and it's clones and go from there." That does two things: Initially exclude semi-automatic versions of the AK-47, and have a possible extension to all firearms. That's why you need definitions.
