This news hurts my heart. I visited the Springs a few years ago and absolutely love it out there. Then I read about this tragedy this morning. I was at a few websites earlier reading the comments and that hurt my heart as well. Sinners themselves condoning this senseless violence. I felt so alone in asking for compassion. And many of the posters were supposedly faithful Christians. The sheer number of people who ignore their bibles is absolutely staggering to me. My heart goes out to those folks needlessly suffering from this gun violence.

There are alot of people that are Christian in name only, frankly.

It's ironic that the sermon at church today was about kind words. Something I think many people that label themselves "Evangelical" lack. Discussions about sexuality and gender in the US are steeped in toxicity, and most of it comes from people that claim to follow Jesus, or at least pay lip service to Christianity.

Ah but there is always scope to find stuff in the Old Testament to condemn whichever bigotry takes your fancy, at odds with the Christian teaching of the Gospels.

It is an unlovely aspect of a certain kind of Christian.

It's stochastic terrorism, frankly. When you spend decades characterizing gay people as being abominations, threats, pariahs, etc., violence is bound to happen.

Christianity isn't, or shouldn't be, the worship of a book, much less the weaponization of Bible verses. It should be about discipleship to Jesus Christ. And Jesus never told his disciples to go out and persecute gay people or stigmatize them. In fact he didn't have alot of good to say about "traditional family values" (quite the contrary). That's something human beings invented.

In any case, the Bible never should be used to justify or condone murder. The killer has been caught, but the pastor who preached such hatred goes on with his hateful poison.

And we are very, very, very few...

And the world, and most christians, and the religious, or the spiritual, does not hear us, nor accepts us, or ever let's us in...

So, after a while of trying to teach and show and convince, we retire into the background, and seek out another path...

And it oftentimes turns out to be the one we should have been on all along, to ever even begin with...

It's not about having a "divine stamp of approval". It's about not being a moral monster and actually caring about other human beings. That is what Jesus ethics' points towards: love, without qualifications.

I have a really good friend with whom I frequently discuss the bible and faith. We both deeply believe in God and Jesus. While I discuss my temptations and fighting against them, he merely accepts his shortcomings without fighting temptation. His temptations are basically lustful desires. He watches movies specifically for the nudity and googles naked celebrities and such. I have tried talking with him about faith and works. I believe if one has faith he works to avoid temptations and obstacles to salvation. It worries me because he simply accepts his faults without working to avoid temptation. He thinks God will simply forgive him while he continues to live in his sins. I fear he is in for a very unpleasant surprise.
