GOP senator: black women responsible for state's high maternal mortality "for whatever reason."

Probably because Louisiana is not located in Sub-Saharan Africa --or are the banning geography in the schools now?

These are what the left used to call 1st world problems.

When you have to sort out the people around you locally according to certain metrics to complain....but compared to people elsewhere by those same metrics, you have it far better than them.

This is not news for black people. The statistics are well-known. Poor pre-natal care for black women because of medical racism is usually blamed, but I'd dispute that.

First, a normal pregnancy and birth should require very little care besides healthy nutrition.

Second, when we look at the same types of maternal deaths in other populations, the primary cause is obesity. But nobody is honest enough or courageous enough to point to the cause of the problem. Black people are killing ourselves by not managing our own health.
And the like of universal healthcare is a national disgrace.

No... Not knowing the difference between Louisiana and Africa is your problem... And I do hope you sort it out soon.

It's very confusing. Did you know there was an Angola in Africa too? ;)

Why Louisiana’s maternal mortality rates are so high

Two things:

  1. "Correct our population for race"? Interesting choice of words, Senator -- how does one "correct" a third of your state?
  2. "For whatever reason"? Care to look into that; maybe do something about it?
Thoughts?
Thoughts? Where to start .....

First off; the title of this thread is quite misleading. There are multiple reasons listed, "including racial bias in care, higher rates of preeclampsia among American Black women — a serious high blood pressure condition that is the leading cause of maternal deaths worldwide — and the difficulty for women especially in rural areas to easily and quickly get to medical care.", not to mention victims of homicide, suicide and other factors. So, it's not like Cassidy nonchalantly and without care said they have no idea why this is.

Also, if one only went by the snipped and patched quote mines here, (instead of reading the entire article for themselves and clicking on all the links therein), they would never know that Cassidy IS doing something about it. Cassidy-Led Bill to Research Minority Health Disparities Signed into Law | U.S. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana This is a bi-partisan, Cassidy-led bill, signed into law by President Biden.

Cassidy is one of the good guys in all this.

Not at all, "for whatever reason" was put in quotes because it was, in fact, a direct quote.

Are you suggesting it was not?

There are multiple reasons listed,

...which were eventually explained to Senator Bill Cassidy... and, to his credit, he acknowledged them.

Guess the population need not be "corrected for race," after all?

Poor fellow, it was a gaffe, without racist intent. But I want you to know that it could not possibly be racist in it's effects, either, because unwitting racism does not exist. You are only a racist if you think yourself to be one and you can't do anything racist unless you think yourself to be one. At least, that's how I understand it from my conservative colleagues here.

We haven't figured out yet how universal healthcare would deal with self-inflicted health problems.
Regular contact with a health care provider improves long term health outcomes. If your only health care provider is an ER or Urgent Care then the long term health outcomes are worse.

It's very confusing.

Sorry...you suggested systemic racism as a cause.

I'm of the understanding (though everyone defines it differently) that these are the lingering cumulative effects of racism that starts all the way back in the days of slavery.

Do you define it differently?

Good that you realize that Louisiana is not in Africa.

Oh good...you subtly suggested that systemic racism plays a part as well...

Which all right thinking people know is not legally possible to discuss or contemplate.

That's actually not bad. And ask yourself, why was it a gaffe? If there had never been slavery, would it have been?

We’ll be treating them earlier in less intensive and expensive care. People that get regular healthcare become better recipients. The excuse that people and healthcare will not be perfect is short sighted and not evidence based.

This message comes to you from a four decade healthcare veteran.

Great, so had the ancestors of these women never suffered from the systemic racism you blame for the problem....we can safely say these women or the descendants who would have replaced them....would still be in Sub-Saharan Africa wouldn't they?

Not sure if it's a gaffe.

I cannot answer that question without putting my career at risk.

Pretty sure diversity initiatives have already put it at risk....

But I get it, some people just don't want to be caught on the wrong side of a popular opinion. Better to play it safe and say whatever is fashionable.

We have more access to health care now than 50 years ago, yet more self-inflicted health problems than 50 years ago.

And, strangely, there was a higher percentage of blacks who were doctors 100 years ago than today.

That is your opinion, and as long as you have enough Right Wing government officials in agreement, I cannot disagree without putting my carer at risk.
