My question is based on John's letters, before Church tomorrow I'm reading in depth johns letters. John has always greatly taught how people are saved but johns letters are very confusing does his "you don't have the Holy Spirit or his "you're in darkness " comments mean that these people never possessed the Holy Spirit?

Sure John must realize that Christians grow at different rates. He doesn't mean they never possessed light or darkness before. I mean it's possible for a Christian to temporarily walk in darkness isn't it? If not I'm in darkness and not saved. Or I af least was at one point.

My opinion is when we receive the Holy Spirit, He changes us so we don't go back > He makes each person in Jesus "one spirit with Him" > 1 Corinthians 6:17 < this changes a person, into almighty union with God and how this effects or character so we can not change back.

But we can have failures. So . . . in case you get in a bad spot . . . trust God to evaluate you. Do not merely hold on to some doctrine, but make sure with God, and trust God to do whatsoever He wants to do with you. And beware of whatever made you able to give in and fail.

If we sin, we don't need assurance of how much God loves us no matter what we do, but we need real correction which is proof of how He loves us > Hebrews 12:4-14. So, I don't think this is about what label to put on ourselves of being "saved" or "lost our salvation", but trust God to do what He knows He wants to do with us.

What about 1 John 5:1? If somebody is in darkness so to speak yet are born again how does that t work? Does that make any sense?

Well . . . let's see what 1 John 5:1 says >

"Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him." (1 John 5:1)

So, being in darkness could include not loving children of God. In case a person is in this sort of darkness . . . of not loving . . . then I would not hurry to say the person is "born again". But in case the person has trusted in Jesus > Ephesians 1:12 > do what you can to help him or her to get real correction, so he or she finds out how to love.

Ephesians 4:31-32 says how to relate as God's family >

"Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you." (Ephesians 4:31-32)

We need God's light of love in us to have us doing what this means, and "even as God" forgiving one another.

And Jesus says,

"'And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, that your Father in heaven may also forgive you your trespasses.'" (Mark 11:25)

So, in case someone is in darkness of unforgiveness . . . this is a real problem, not only a question of what label, of "saved" or "unsaved", to put on the person. If we have someone who is in darkness of not loving the way God's word says to love and to forgive "even as God" . . . you can pray for the person and share these scriptures with him or her, and trust God to bring the person light of how love has us seeing things :)

And be an example of this, in the sight of God, so how you are becoming can be ministered by God to spread to other children of God.

We can turn back away from God, and die all over again, yes. So:
If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.” 1 John 1:6

But:
“If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.” 1 John 1:8-9

And:
If you see any brother or sister commit a sin that does not lead to death, you should pray and God will give them life.” 1 John 5:16

If we want eternal security, we walk in the light- or return to it if we leave.
