No, it's not. If it were, no one would be saved.

That does not follow.

Yes, but the kind of person you are referring to, and which is described in that verse, appears certainly not to have saving faith, or else he would not be a devotee of evil.

The same faith by which we are saved also leads us to obey the Mosaic Law, though people can obey the Mosaic Law for reasons other than faith in Christ.

Why do many Christians not understand that it is by God's grace that we are saved through our faith? Why do they understand that our faith is not of our own doing but that it is a gift of God? Not by our works because our works are as righteous as filthy rags?

Why do they not understand that to accept this teaching does not make them robots nor does it nullify God's grace but instead enhances it a billion times fold? Why do they not understand that it is God that needs all the glory, not mankind because without God, we are nothing.

Why do people not understand that without God's sovereignty we are nothing? Or that there is not a single thing that happens that goes outside of God's sovereign will and God is sovereign over all?

Sound familiar? It should and not a single word I said did I make up on my own but was Holy Scripture. Because I just quoted one of the most popular pieces of scripture that Paul wrote and mentioned several sections of the Bible including what the Prophet Isaiah prophesied all those years ago. Because, Christians the world over love to quote these verses to say that we aren't saved by our works (which is true) but, they also ignore the rest of what Paul and the prophets wrote. Let me explain and highlight Ephesians 2:8-9 for people.

Ephesians 2:8-9

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast.

Yes, it is your faith that saves you. There's no twisting or disagreement here. But your faith does not come from you, it comes from the grace and mercy of God. This faith is more precious than gold, because it comes from God. This faith will never waver and will never go away, because it comes from and is kept by God.

Don't believe me? Read what Paul, Peter, Jesus, and the writer of Hebrews said about our faith and about our salvation. Study it and take its meaning to heart because, everything I said is all there. Especially the Apostle Peter who said that we are a chosen possession and God's forever. Born of not corruptible seed, but incorruptible.

Yet, it's a frequent belief in Christianty that Eternal Security is a doctrine of the devil. Why? Because the Apostles talked about it and they're of the devil? That's essentially what they're saying. Its commonly taught that the basic idea of the reformed theology is from the Devil as well. Why? Because Paul is of the devil? Be careful what you're saying here. I didn't write these things, the Apostles and Prophets did. The apostle Paul may have had a shady past but Christ said he was chosen by God and everything that comes from his mouth is true, even Peter said so. I'll say it again. We are saved by Grace through faith. This faith is not of ourselves but is a gift from God and that faith will last now and forever. Amen!

I say "amen and amen"! But always remember the next verse about the resulting good works of thankfulness that come from God's gift of faith and that God also enables us to do those good works. I am a retired CRC pastor and agree with everything you said, but we need to balance God's sovereignty with humanity's full responsibility for all of our actions and thoughts, or we descend into fatalism. Joseph had it right in Genesis 50:20.

Not at all. Eternal Security does not stand up to the test of scripture. Hebrews is a book given to us to warn us not to slip away.

Heb 2:1 Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things that were heard, lest haply we drift away from them.

Heb 3:12 Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God.

Heb 6:4-6 For as touching those who were once enlightened and tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Spirit, and tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the age to come, and then fell away, it is impossible to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put him to an open shame.

You can be "once enlightened" , by the "Holy Spirit", then "fall away".

Our security is based on the cross, yes, and by grace, but it is not guaranteed.

Heb 10:35-38 Cast not away therefore your confidence, which hath great recompence of reward. For ye have need of patience, that, after ye have done the will of God, ye might receive the promise. For yet a little while, and he that shall come will come, and will not tarry. Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

2Pe 1:2-10 Grace and peace be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God, and of Jesus our Lord, According as his divine power hath given unto us all things that pertain unto life and godliness, through the knowledge of him that hath called us to glory and virtue: Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust. And beside this, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue; and to virtue knowledge; And to knowledge temperance; and to temperance patience; and to patience godliness; And to godliness brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness charity. For if these things be in you, and abound, they make you that ye shall neither be barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But he that lacketh these things is blind, and cannot see afar off, and hath forgotten that he was purged from his old sins. Wherefore the rather, brethren, give diligence to make your calling and election sure: for if ye do these things, ye shall never fall:

When we are saved the Holy Spirit empowers us to leave behind our sins, we share in the Divine nature. It is our job to maintain, and add to our virtues, with the assistance of God, who strengthens us as we seek Him daily.

2Ti 2:19 Nevertheless the foundation of God standeth sure, having this seal, The Lord knoweth them that are his. And, Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.

Mar 14:38 Watch ye and pray, lest ye enter into temptation. The spirit truly is ready, but the flesh is weak.

I know we are saved by God's grace and I am under God's grace, but God also said "if you love me, you obey my commandments" and if I sin I repent. That's what it says in the Bible. There's no one human being who can be so perfect that never sin. Thank God for His mercy^_^

People are blinded! It took me a long time to get it myself. I had believed a lie that I wasn't acceptable to God and I had to earn my salvation. sAdly, I carried this falsehood for many years after being born again and am only starting to come out of it

Eternal Security is by God's election. None God has chosen will be lost.

HOW God accomplishes this is through many means, including our choices. If we slip away, we never were his. THEREFORE -- We MUST obey, so as not to slip away. See how this works? We do so because it is so. And if it is so, we will do so.

A similar phenomenon shows up in what Christ says, when John (the Baptist) protested baptizing him: “Let it be so now,” Jesus replied. “It is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness in this way.” Again it shows up in the Gospels, several places, where Jesus makes it sound like he is going to do this and that for the specific purpose of fulfilling prophecy!

What are His commandments?

Well He told us to love God and our neighbour as ourselves and in that, all of them.are fulfilled, even the 10 we have been given and other guidelines and instructions Jesus, and the apostles preached

You can be "once enlightened", by the "Holy Spirit", then "fall away".
Notice the words, "it is not possible", in some versions at the beginning of the discourse. The passage may well not be saying that such a person can fall away, (or better, will fall away,) but that if he did it would be impossible to return to repentance. But there are several other ways to look at it, including the fact that those who apply the principles of obedience do indeed reap benefits, yet "I never knew you".

That's essentially what they're saying. Its commonly taught that the basic idea of the reformed theology is from the Devil as well. Why? Because Paul is of the devil? We are saved by Grace through faith. This faith is not of ourselves but is a gift from God and that faith will last now and forever. Amen!

On the contrary, most Christians believe in the view that says we are saved by God’s grace alone and no works of any kind are required. This means most Christians believe they can sin and still be saved on some level and still be saved. But is that what Paul was teaching? See Romans 6:1 for the answer.

The Bible said:
Ephesians 2:8-9

8 "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God:

9 Not of works, lest any man should boast."

So it is by God's grace, who is a person named Jesus Christ and what He has done for us, by which we are saved by the vehicle of faith. We are saved by His mercy when we first come to Him and we are saved by His mercy if we were to stumble (on occasion) in the fact that we seek forgiveness with Him by faith. This is not something that is of ourselves that we can take credit for here. This is God's grace. It can cleanse us. Both when we first come to Him and if we ever were to stumble on occasion. It is a gift of God. Jesus. He is that gift. For by Jesus we can seek out His forgiveness and be reconciled by what He has done for us with His death and resurrection.

This Jesus who is grace and the gift is what saves us ultimately and it is not of our works alone. For if salvation was by works alone, then a man could boast. So salvation is not by Works Alone so that any man should boast.

The Bible said:
Ephesians 2:10

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them."

Works of faith (and not "Works Alone Salvationism" that does not include God's grace) is what takes place after we accept the Lord as our Savior for salvation. We are Christ's workmanship. We are His masterpiece. We are created anew by being born again spiritually after we sought out forgiveness of our sins with the Lord Jesus. We are given a new heart with new desires. Also, Jesus lives in us and does the good work, as well (See John 15:5). This is how we are able to be created unto good works. With a regenerated new born again spirit and with Jesus living in us, we can do good works which God has ordained (pre-arranged before this world was formed) that we should walk in these good works. The word "should" is used here. Saying of the necessity and importance of these good works that are to follow one's faith in the Lord for salvation.

But Ephesians 2 is primarily focuses on our initial or ultimate salvation (See Ephesians 2:11-18), and not on our Sanctification or the works that must follow. Verse 10 is merely a quick point of what needs to happen after we are saved by God's grace (Jesus). Nothing in Ephesians 2 is clearly mentioned about Sanctification (or living holy) as a part of our salvation because it's focus is fighting against Works Alone Salvationism. However, we know by other verses in the Bible that Sanctification is a part of our salvation (See 2 Thessalonians 2:13). Even Jesus said if you will enter into life, keep the commandments (Matthew 19:17). Hebrews 5:9 says that Christ is the author of eternal salvation to all who obey Him. So Scripture has to be read as a whole and we cannot isolate verses so as to justify a wrong belief (Especially when that belief is immoral).

All throughout the Bible, God wanted His people to repent and to return to obedience to the Mosaic Law, and even Christ began his ministry with that message, so it would be absurd to interpret Galatians 5:4 as Paul warning us against doing that and saying that we will be cut off from Christ if we follow Christ. In Psalms 119:29, David wanted God to be gracious to him by teaching him to obey the Mosaic Law, so that is what being under grace looks like, not the way to fall from grace. It would again be absurd to interpret that as saying David wanted God to be gracious to him by teaching him how to fall from grace. Paul's problem in Galatians was not with those who were teaching Gentiles how to obey the Mosaic Law as if following Christ was somehow a negative thing, but rather his problem was with those who were teaching Gentiles that they needed to obey their works of the law in order to become justified.

Likewise, in Romans 1:5, we have received grace in order to bring about the obedience of faith, and in Titus 2:11-14, our salvation is described as being trained by grace to do what is godly, righteous, and good, and to renounce doing what is ungodly, which is what the Mosaic Law was given to teach us how to do, so God graciously teaching us to obey the Mosaic Law is itself part of the content of His free gift of salvation and participating in that training does nothing to earn it, but rather that is what it looks like to receive it. In Ephesians 2:8-10, we have been made new creations in Christ in order to do good works, so while we do not earn our salvation by doing good works, doing good works in obedience to God though faith is nevertheless an integral part of our salvation from not doing good works.

That wasn’t the case here. These Galatians we’re trying to be justified by the law. They were trying to attain righteousness thru obedience to the law rather than understanding that they are already justified by their faith in Christ’s sacrifice. Once we are in Christ we don’t have to try to attain justification we already have it as long as we remain in Him. This means that we love and obey Him.

Correct. The forgiveness we obtain because of Christ's substitution does not only apply to sin before regeneration, but after, also.

Do they not receive God's words ( John 8:43-47 )?
Do they not have the Holy Ghost in them ( Romans 8:1-17, 1 Corinthians 2:6-16, 1 John 2:20-27 )? Time will tell.

Did Romans 8:29-30 not come into play?
Is Matthew 13:10-11 not responsible? Perhaps.

Romans 9:22? It's gut-wrenching to think that it could be true...but I hope not.
Romans 9:23? I truly hope so.

Again, time will tell.

this makes the most sense to me.

It's about our hearts not about never making a mistake. No one is righteous outside of Jesus

I don't think anyone is talking about "by works alone". Why go there?

Because that is what Paul is referring to in Ephesians 2:8-9. He is speaking against Works Alone Salvationism that did not include God’s grace.

Paul was fighting against "Circumcision Salvationism" (Which is Law Alone Salvationism without God's grace); A certain sect of Jews were trying to deceive some Christians into thinking they had to first be circumcised in order to be saved. This was a heresy that was clearly addressed at the Jerusalem council (See Acts of the Apostles 15:1, Acts of the Apostles 15:5, Acts of the Apostles 15:24). Paul also addressed this problem; Paul said to the Galatians that if you seek to be circumcised, Christ will profit you nothing (Galatians 5:2), and then Paul mentions how if you seek to be justified by the Law, you have fallen from grace (Galatians 5:4). This "law" is the Torah because circumcision is not a part of the commands given to us by Jesus and His followers.

Most likely it is because the churches which teach that it is by our own works that we may be saved have preached it to them relentlessly, ofttimes also including a misrepresentation of James' "faith without works" statement.

It certainly does not make more sense to believe that we, while we are in sin, have the ability to earn our salvation by our own efforts, than to believe that the "Savior" was sent to teach and to die for us because we are unable to save ourselves.

That's why I suggest that it is more likely that those who are convinced of "works righteousness" have simply had it drilled into them by some church.

I think it is human nature more than it is church propaganda. We want to be in control and not dependent upon God to save us. We want to be in a position to force him to accept us because of our righteousness. So when a church tells us we must not only have faith but works to be saved it resonates with our human desires.

Believers are initially and ultimately saved by God's grace (i.e. Jesus Christ). It is why a person who comes to Jesus for the first time can have an assurance of salvation (Without doing any kind of work). Initial and ultimate salvation is a gift from God (Ephesians 2:8-9). We are not ultimately saved by works of righteousness we have done alone without God's mercy (Titus 3:5). For even if a believer were to stumble into sin, do they get clean by doing another work? No. They get clean by confessing their sins to Jesus (1 John 2:1) (1 John 1:9) and they ask Jesus to help them to overcome their sin (or to forsake it) (Matthew 26:41) (Romans 13:14) (John 15:5). But make no mistake, Scripture is also abundantly clear in that it teaches we are saved by "works of faith" after we are saved by God's grace, too. How so?

  1. We are justified by works and not by faith alone (James 2:24).

  2. Faith without works is dead (James 2:17).

  3. A person can deny God by a lack of works (Titus 1:16).

  4. Jesus agreed with the lawyer that to love God, and to love your neighbor is a part of inheriting eternal life (Luke 10:25-28).

  5. Those who have done good, shall come forth unto the resurrection of life; and those who have done evil, shall come forth unto the resurrection of damnation (John 5:29).

  6. We have to continue in His goodness, otherwise we can be cut off [just like the Jews were cut off] (Romans 11:21-22).

  7. Helping the poor, and the unfortunate relates to inheriting the Kingdom (Matthew 25:34-40), and not helping the poor, and the unfortunate relates to going away into everlasting punishment (Matthew 25:41-46).

  8. Whoever does not righteousness or does not love his brother is not of God (1 John 3:10).

  9. Whoever does what Jesus says is likened unto a wise man who built his house upon the rock, and when a storm came, it did not fall, (Matthew 7:24-25), but the person who does not do what Jesus says is likened unto a fool who built his house upon the sand, and when a storm came, great was the fall of that house (Matthew 7:26-27).

  10. Abiding in Jesus will bear much fruit, but if a person does not abide in Jesus [thereby being unfruitful], they are cast out [or cut off] like a branch to be burned in the fire (John 15:5-6).

  11. If the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear? Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing (1 Peter 4:18-19).

  12. Pursue peace with all people, and holiness, without which no one will see the Lord (Hebrews 12:14) (NKJV).

Notice the words, "it is not possible", in some versions at the beginning of the discourse.
I find that with some, that usually gets missed:

" For [it is] impossible for those who were once enlightened, and have tasted of the heavenly gift, and were made partakers of the Holy Ghost,
5 and have tasted the good word of God, and the powers of the world to come,
6 if they shall fall away, to renew them again unto repentance; seeing they crucify to themselves the Son of God afresh, and put [him] to an open shame.
7 For the earth which drinketh in the rain that cometh oft upon it, and bringeth forth herbs meet for them by whom it is dressed, receiveth blessing from God:
8 but that which beareth thorns and briers [is] rejected, and [is] nigh unto cursing; whose end [is] to be burned."
( Hebrews 6:4-8 ).

The passage may well not be saying that such a person can fall away, (or better, will fall away,) but that if he did it would be impossible to return to repentance.
I agree, and here's how I see it:

It's not possible for those that were enlightened by His word, tasted of the Heavenly gift of His grace and mercy, and were made partakers of the indwelling and sealing of the Holy Ghost...
IF they shall fall away, to renew them again to repentance.

To do so would necessitate the Son of God going back to the cross for them, and being crucified again...
Which would put Him to an open shame.

We also know that that which bears thorns and briers ( instead of true and lasting spiritual fruit, see Matthew 13 and Galatians 5:22-23 ) is rejected...
Tares, those who do not abide in Christ, those who profess with the lips but whose hearts are far from Him, those who fall away from their hope in Him, those who claim to know Him but in works deny Him, those who love this world and its ways. Those who were never born again.

Their end is to be burned, while the "wheat" gets gathered into Christ's barn.

This passage, as well as many others, serve as warnings to all who profess Christ;
That there are, indeed, some that will fall away.

But it wasn't because they were His sheep and "couldn't cut it".
It's because they were never His, and God did not keep them, through faith, by His own power ( 1 Peter 1:5 ).

Christ will lose none of the ones that were given to Him by His Father ( John 6:39 ).

All 613? Are there more besides?

Even when the law was first given to Moses, there wasn't a single person who was required to obey all of them, and not even Jesus followed the ones in regard to having a period or to giving birth.
