If caffeine or whatever, fat, sugar, starch etc is something you yourself need to avoid or cut down on, the Holy Spirit will speak to you about it.

Exactly. I am curious if others have been convicted against caffeine and coffee. Again, it's not the coffee. Romans 14.

Well, in a sense God gave me that conviction by my taste buds.

I hate the taste of coffee so much I need about 2 gallons of creamer and 2 pounds of sugar to one cup of coffee.

That is until I found a cold brew coffee and mixing it with milk tastes like the only coffee drink I DO like, those cold bottled starbucks mochas. Now I try to have a cup as I drive into work but it is far from a coffee obsession. I dont need a lot of sugar, nor do I need a lot of milk.

An actual conviction to avoid, no.

Well, we know that each Biblical Hebrew letter has a corresponding numerical value. The modern Hebrew word for coffee is transliterated into English as qfh. The numerical values are q = 100; f = 20; h = 5. Total: 125. The number 125 corresponds with the Hebrew word “reddish”. So, I guess Esau might have liked coffee. Any (reconciled) friend of Jacob is a friend of mine. Who knows? Maybe they drank coffee instead of passing a peace pipe.

Use to drink coffee, but would over do it to the point of abuse... high anxiety, high chance of irritable. Talking about 16oz drink in the span of an hour, then another cup after that hour. It's been about 4-7 days since the last glass. Also the day just moves to fast in my opinion. Getting old.. lol.

I am just curious if anyone has been convicted by the Holy Spirit against drinking coffee.

I know God allows some things in people's lives and not in others so I am just curious about your relationship with coffee.
All things in moderation, my friend.

" All things are lawful unto me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but I will not be brought under the power of any." ( 1 Corinthians 6:12 ).

It's even OK to have an alcoholic drink...
But don't get drunk.
If you cannot resist getting drunk, then don't drink.

Also, remember Romans 14... and be mindful of those younger believers that see you doing things that may cause them to stumble.

Nope. I have to laugh since it's part of my user name. I love coffee but it doesn't love me. Most days I limit myself to my one morning cup due to GERD. Gastroesophageal reflux disease and coffee don't go together.

I have not felt convicted over coffee. Coffee also has some positive health benefits as does a little alcohol. It's a natural substance as is every other thing that God made, but like anything it can be abused.

I wouldn't say I've been convicted to never drink it, but I care about my health and well-being enough not to drink it on a regular basis. My relationship with it is only at church, which was about twice per week before COVID. I love having a hot beverage in my hand during Bible study. It's gotten to where I feel naked without it, and know others even worse than that. They are guaranteed to start the coffee maker if no one has done it yet. I wish churches would allow it in the church service. I drink other options when they are available, like tea or cocoa, but usually it's just coffee available.

I've known people who believe that churches shouldn't be offering the fancy coffee bars that so many megachurches do. They're like a mini-Starbucks. I look at it as another way to make money.

I haven't touched it since COVID struck, last Feb or March, since I haven't been to church. I'm convince from what I've read, and from people who make a living in physiology and medicine, that the BEST proper amount is zero, including any high caffeine drink.

I must have been addicted to caffeinated soda without realizing it, cause at one point it was my only drink of choice all day and night. Sensing that something was wrong, (i.e. bad sleep, withdrawal headaches, or whatever symptoms), and since I'm the type to quit something cold turkey, I was miserable for several days after I quit, but after those days, I felt better than I had in a long time, so that's when I knew it was having an affect on me for sure. Years before that, I was drinking too much fresh brewed ice tea at work and had restless legs at night. Now, I drink just a few cans of soda per week, (2 or 3), and only with food, or maybe ice cream (float). And I know it's best not to drink it after 6 pm, the latest being only as a dessert at dinner time, and only if I know I'll be awake a few more hours for any effect to hopefully wear off, and never a full 12 oz can with the ice cream (smaller portion).

Unrelated to all that, is the broad idea of wanting to live as long as possible in order to keep doing the Lord's will as long as possible. So really, one could make the case that any fast food, caffeine, high fat, smoking, etc. that's unhealthy is not consistent with His calling if you believe he want's you doing what you do for as long as possible. Many would say 'moderation is the key. (i.e. wine drinkers). I've known people who drink coffee all day at work and that's far from moderation. Between the caffeine and nicotine, they were neurotics on two feet and a pain to work with. If I were still working an office job, I might have one cup, but only to help wake me up. I don't like warm soda, and don't really like it as a morning beverage unless I'm dead tired and HAVE to wake up and nothing else is available. Either is bad for the stomach. Soda, acid and caffeine. Coffee has caffeine and oils that I don't care for.

A man once said to me, "I'd rather add life to my years than years to my life."
If we don't smoke and if we exercise, I figure we're way ahead of the game, whatever else is done 'in moderation.' I guess my answer would be a partial conviction, but not 100%.

I asked a veterinarian friend once, "What's your opinion of caffeine" and he said "I wouldn't live without it!" Obviously FAR from ANY conviction, but I don't know if he was a Christian or not.

It's not sinful. It has helped power days of service for me. However, I noticed that cutting back on caffeine lowered my blood pressure by 10 points, so in the interest of taking care of my temple, I try to not need it.

I've struggled with many addictions in my life. Unfortunately, I didn't catch some of them before irreparable organ damage was done (diabetes).

Most people don't realize that they are addicted things in their lives. They just accept it as normal life, but these things add up over time, both physically and mentally. It's important to recognize that these things have a spiritual effect as well.

1 Corinthians 3:16-17 KJV Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? If any man defile the temple of God, him shall God destroy; for the temple of God is holy, which temple ye are.
We are to keep our temple holy, so that the Holy Spirit can dwell in us. This is why I don't drink caffeine. I used to, but I don't any more.

Here's a list of things I've overcome in my own life:

Meat
I was literally addicted to meat. I couldn't have a meal without it. I constantly craved hamburgers and chose meats over vegetables and fruits. In fact, such was the hold of meat on me that I would buy apples and not touch them for months because they weren't appetizing. The problem was the savory taste of meat, which had my palate held hostage. I conquered meat addiction by replacing my favorite meat foods with vegetarian alternatives. I created a new menu of tasty options for my meals and started eating them. Before I knew it, meat cravings disappeared and I actually started eating fruits, vegetables, grains and nuts.

Over-Eating
I was raised on huge portions. It's a wonder I wasn't severely overweight. Every meal I ate twice as much as I needed to eat, probably more. I was taught to eat until the plate is clean. This was a life-long habit and I was addicted to over-eating at every meal.

Sweets
Even though I had removed soft drinks from my life decades before, I replaced them with sweets. Donuts, candy bars and other sweet snacks. I would eat these things two or three times a day. This led to a diabetes diagnosis. My numbers were so bad the doctor's office called me immediately the next morning. I removed sugar from my life and replaced it with fruits like dates, apples, oranges and bananas. I conquered diabetes with diet change and regular exercise.

Coffee
I was drinking two 20 oz (hot) or 24 oz (cold) coffee drinks a day. While I removed the sugar aspect, I was still getting sugar from the whole milk and it was very fattening. Coffee always gave me jitters and heart palpitations. The jitters made the low blood sugar thing that much worse and I would over-eat to compensate for the jitters. It kept me awake at night and I couldn't go a few hours between coffees. I was spending huge amounts of money at Starbucks. I quit Starbucks cold-turkey and never looked back.

There are other addictions I've conquered, but I won't mention here. I'm sure you can guess what some of them were. Even entertainment can be an addiction. Every one of these addictions does something to you in some way.

If we're called to have holy temples, then that is what I will strive for and accomplish.

Of course not. Why would He? I don't doubt that there are some fundamentalist Protestant churches that forbid coffee, and just about anything else you can think of. They each forbid whatever their own human founder doesn't like, and there are thousands of such founders. Jesus Christ founded just one Church, said it was to remain one, and promised that one Church the fullness of God's truth until the end of time, and Jesus never forbade His Church from eating or drinking anything. He did forbid the excessive use of alcoholic beverages, for obvious reasons. However, He also used wine in instituting the holiest sacrament of His Church.

I never thought that I'd ever find a pot of coffee too strong.
I brew it for myself as strong as I can.

Then I went to Brazil...
I usually add a little coffee creamer to mine but all they had was milk...sokay.

But I tried a cup from the buffet and wowzers...
I had to add a little hot water...and my eyes were so wide open I had to pull them back forward from the backside of my head.
Couldn't even sit still for a second cup.
Until I did...I fell in love with the coffee there. They are my newest coffee heroes.

All my adult life I used to drink 10 mugs a day, including just before I went to bed. It had no ill effects as far as I knew. It did not hinder my sleep. I went off coffee in just one day. I drink tea now. Perhaps God knows that as I get older, coffee is not so good for me.

I like coffee as a nice drink.
I also drink alcohol occasionally.

Knowing ones limits and emotional expression is the key, like one chocolate is fine, the whole box is out of control....

The issues are often emotional but demonstrated through our behaviour. The Lord addresses our hearts which resolve the other issues.

God bless you

I love reading a coffee post in the morning. ^_^ Everything in moderation is good. Especially cccooofffeee. :) I am glad I can exercise self control with it. I can enjoy things better that I had to avoid in the past. It is good to have God first in mind, even with liquid gold. :) You will be blessed.
