Civil Rights Law Protects Gay and Transgender Workers, Supreme Court Rules

The Supreme Court ruled Monday that a landmark civil rights law protects gay and transgender workers from workplace discrimination, handing the movement for L.G.B.T. equality a stunning victory.

The vote was 6 to 3, with Justice Neil M. Gorsuch writing the majority opinion. He was joined by Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. and Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen G. Breyer, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

The case concerned Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which bars employment discrimination based on race, religion, national origin and sex. The question for the justices was whether that last prohibition — discrimination “because of sex”— applies to many millions of gay and transgender workers.

Score one for common sense.

Thoughts?

I don't know why anyone would want to see LGBT people fired simply because of their sexual identity, taking away their means to care for themselves. It just doesn't make any sense to me. The SCOTUS did the right thing under the law.

6-3 including one Trump justice who wrote the majority.

Religious conservatives... you got played if the Supreme Court is your reason for voting Trump.

I don't agree that anyone got played, hear what Colorado Republican leaders said about Gorsuch. If anyone got played it's because they weren't paying attention.

A joint statement from U.S. Reps. Scott Tipton, Mike Coffman, Doug Lamborn, and Ken Buck, all Republicans representing Colorado -- “The nomination of Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill the vacancy on the Supreme Court is welcome news. Judge Gorsuch’s record in the Court of Appeals for the Tenth Circuit shows that he will defend the original intent of our Founding Fathers and preserve the fundamental rights of Americans protected by the Constitution. It will be great to see a Coloradan serve on the country’s highest court, and considering he was confirmed for his current position by voice vote in the U.S. Senate in 2006, we encourage our Colorado colleagues in the U.S. Senate to support Judge Gorsuch’s swift confirmation.”

That's exactly what his vote has done here.

OK, maybe I should have said "Christian theocrats"

People who thought Trump would nominate justices who automatically put 'the Bible' before the Constitution should be disappointed.

As I said, if they got played it was because they weren't paying attention.

imo, there are very few judges of this caliber that will ignore the Constitution in order to please others or themselves.

To be fair, this isn't a Constitutional matter, it's straight up statutory interpretation. I haven't read the dissents yet, but I really think this should have been a 9-0 case. Lets see if I find the dissent persuasive at all.

Favorite line from Alito's dissent: "The Court’s opinion is like a pirate ship."

Similes... when you wish you had a legal argument, but nothing comes to mind...

Voting for a man that promises to appoint ideologues can only take you so far. It's very, very difficult to convince a university educated person, whether conservative or liberal, that discrimination based on sexual orientation really fits with the ideals enshrined in liberal democracies.

The dissenting justices also probably rely on some legal tomfoolery. Somebody like Justice Thomas, for instance, probably doesn't believe the Constitution gives the federal government the power in the first place.

I just went to the gutter of the Internet, the comment section of WND.com. The comments there are funny (if you like Schadenfreude):
"Everyone on the conservative side celebrated Trumps SCOTUS picks, Gorsuch and Kavanaugh, so far they are both suspect and appear to be closet liberals."

"Sad. If this is true. I bought me a maga hat, I will not be wearing it. What will be the use in voting for him, if he is going to pick liberals."

"These damn treasonous justices need to go."

"I knew Trump’s picks would be activists.

Wait for Single payer option next 4 years

Socialized medicine by Trump"

"So Kavanaugh, Roberts and Gorsuch are now officially part of the kangaroo court of fools."

The court is NOT conservative! When Gorsuch and Roberts were appointed to the court conservative Christians said it was a setback! That was proven by their vote in this case! Trump is PRO homosexual and that is very definitely wrong and very destructive!"
