King James Version >

"Abstain from all appearance of evil."

New King James Version >

"Abstain from every form of evil."

New International Version >

"reject every kind of evil."

There are people who understand the King James verse, here, to mean do not do things which others could take to mean you are having an affair or fornicating. Therefore, for one example, do not go with someone of the opposite sex into a situation where you could be alone to do what is immoral, since you don't want to give others the wrong impression.

Others understand that Paul means abstain from what is the actual appearing of evil. So, if something just looks bad to certain people, this would not be evil actually making an appearance.

It means that a man or woman of God is to be "without reproach" and to avoid potential pitfalls, because as we already know, the enemy, Satan goes about as a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.

And how does Satan get such a foothold? It starts in the mind and heart, and it "takes root". THIS is why we are admonished to put on the FULL ARMOR of God. The devil is seeking ANY gap in our armor, and he WILL get through that gap, any way he can.

This is why Paul tells us to "run that race" and put aside ALL things that would spiritually "weigh us down", etc.

This is also why we are to "pray without ceasing".

As we do this, God grants us spiritual discernment through His Word, so that we can recognize those things that are not of God, and to therefore be that salt and light that He admonished us to be, and call it out.

We are to shine HIS Light into the darkest of places.

Yes, we can avoid getting into evil, by staying away from situations where we know we could get in trouble.

Also . . . in order to avoid evil, we need how God changes our character so that Satan's evil spirit can not corrupt us with lusts and "bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking, with all malice" > see Ephesians 4:31-32. We need to not have these evil things appearing, within us.

Hi, Brinny :)

First, I read what you wrote, and then I thought of what I have offered to supplement what you have shared. It is meant to show us that there is more to evil appearances, than what is outward appearing of evil.

So, meaning to add to what you have shared, I went on to add more. Because ones can focus mainly on what is considered to be outward appearing of evil, but we do not give attention to what can be evil things appearing within us.

God's word says there is "the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience," we have in Ephesians 2:2. Our Apostle Paul says this. So, I understand that any working of Satan's spirit in a person is the appearance of evil, within that person . . . even if it does not obviously show outwardly.

And there are things which God's word says for us to not have in us >

unforgiveness > Mark 11:25

"bitterness, wrath, anger, clamor, and evil speaking, with all malice" (in Ephesians 4:31-32)

and whatever in us that can cause > "complaining and disputing" (see Philippians 2:13-16).

And God's word has plenty more about what within us can be the appearance of evil, though we might not obviously show it. So, anyone else is welcome to share more about this.

God bless you, too :)

This makes no sense.

Romans 12:21

Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.

If one is weak in regard to the opposite sex (lust) then probably wise to avoid private meetings in that regard.

What other people "might think" ... seems to me that would be their issue to deal with.
