'Pence has fouled our paradise': Furious Michiganders slam the vice president after his motorcade descended on car-free Mackinac Island
Motorized vehicles have been banned on one of Michigan's prized natural possessions since 1898, save for emergency and construction vehicles.

But on Saturday, eight cars descended upon Mackinac Island as part of Vice President Mike Pence's motorcade. Paul Egan of the Detroit Free Press was the first to capture and share the historic moment:

I think he should have considered other means. It has been said that the decision was about the safety of the VP of the US. You can admit that bicycles or horses don't seem like they would offer good security. But as for "fouling" the paradise, a few cars won't ruin anything. There are already service and government vehicles used on the island for daily business. He wasn't there on vacation and riding up and down the main drag. He was escorted to his meeting and then left.

...why did he go at all if they were so worried about him not being in a car?

The island has permits which can be applied for if you have a legitimate reason to need to use a car there. The press uses them sometimes when they go to the island to report on events.

Anyway, I think it would have been way cooler if he'd rented one of the horse drawn carriages to take him around.

'Pence has fouled our paradise': Furious Michiganders slam the vice president after his motorcade...

Apparently Pence's wife despises Trump!

The longer Pence plays his loyal vice-president role, the less he will be able to distance himself from Trump's unprecedented actions!

Trump, his personal lawyer, the Attorney General and a host of others are all implicated in Ukraine-gate!

Security reasons. Difficult for secret security to protect a horse drawn carriage. The reasons they gave were safety and security.
They've done it before. And that argument might hold water if they had one vehicle for him to stay under cover and the rest of the Secret Service were on foot or bike like the police were.

Why does it matter? He came for a meeting that was taking place on Mackinaw Islands. The people in charge of his security decided this was the best and safest way for him to attend the meeting. This wasn't the only car on the island at the time...and it wasn't the first car on the island. He came to the meeting and left. No big deal.

Pence is Trump's VP. How does he separate himself from Trump's presidency and why would he want to? I'd worry more about Biden and Biden's son in relationship to the Ukraine. (And I seem to remember that Michigan was a Trump state in the last presidential election.)

Michigan was a Trump state in the last presidential election but by less than a quarter of a percent. You would think they would do anything they could to not antagonize a state they won by that narrow a margin.

I am a Michigander and I don't know anyone who felt antagonized by such a small thing. Having the VP shot or injured in Michigan would have been a bigger issue.
