While researching Protestant denominations, I learned this interesting bit of information: Most, but not all, evangelicals and Pentecostals believe people still receive gifts from the Holy Spirit - including speaking in tongues - when they are saved. Although speaking in tongues is Biblical I have never heard of any new Christians doing so. The same article states other denominations hold the belief that this stopped a long time ago. This makes sense, but they lump together all Holy Spirit gifts, not just speaking in tongues. I don't believe it is all or nothing. What do you think?
When my husband was saved, he'd never even heard of tongues. He listened to the recording from the service he was at and asked who the polynesian guy was talking the funny language. Turned out he recieved tongues even though he didn't know what it was or what to do with it

"Full Preterist Cessationism", huh?
Not me. However, just pointing out there's a variety of views, and no, one doesn't have to be full preterist to have that view about 70 AD, nor believe in full cessationism. Just saying.

In my experience most evangelicals are vehemently opposed to speaking in tongues.

I am guessing there are folks at my church who wouldn't have a clue what speaking in tongues means, it would be so foreign to their experience.

I had classified four types of Christians, regarding Tongues.

1. Those who speak in tongues and belong to a denomination that actively practices it. This would include Assembly of God (who are Trinitarian) as well as United Pentecostal, who are non-Trinitarian (Oneness Pentecostals) and other pentecostals.

That alone brings the phenomenon into question. How could the Holy Spirit inspire a supernatural gift among heretics? Denial of the Holy Trinity in my church is a serious matter, it would mean that we do not recognize their church as Christian.

I will never forget when my friend (who previously attended an Assemblies of God church) went to a Bible study at his Pastor's house once a week and sometimes the Pastor would speak in tongues during their Bible study. My friend worked with a woman (who was Baptist) and was terrified of being around people who spoke in tongues, yet my friend convinced her to come to the Bible study to see for herself that she has nothing to fear. When his lady friend showed up at the Bible study, as soon as she walked in the door, the Pastor began speaking in tongues very loudly with his hands high in the air, then he fell backwards to the floor! My friend said that even he was freaked out by the incident and when he turned around, his lady friend was running for the hills!

That would be the next step if one receives a false version of tongues, being "slain in the spirit", which is not the least bit scriptural. This Pastor worked with a different spirit. Sorry your friend had to experience this. When I was saved in the early 80's NO ONE was getting slain, NO one had weird manifestations. I just don't know how some can normalize what is going on in some Charismatic circles and call it the work of the Holy Spirit. But this is a debate for another thread.

This makes sense, but they lump together all Holy Spirit gifts, not just speaking in tongues. I don't believe it is all or nothing. What do you think?

I think that one has to define what are "Fruits of the Spirit" from what is call the "Sign Gifts".

Fruits of the Spirt are found in Gal. 5:22-23...……
“But the fruit of the Spirit is
love,
joy,
peace,
patience,
kindness,
goodness,
faithfulness,
gentleness and
self-control.”

The fruit of the Holy Spirit is the result of the Holy Spirit’s presence in the life of a Christian. The Bible makes it clear that everyone receives the Holy Spirit the moment he or she believes in Jesus Christ.
Romans 8:9.
1 Corth. 12:13.
Ephesians 1:13-14.

One of the primary purposes of the Holy Spirit coming into a Christian's life is to change that life. It is the Holy Spirit's job to conform us to the image of Christ, making us more like Him.

The "SIGN Gifts" were given to the Apostles personally by the Lord Jesus Christ. THey included.....
speaking in tongues,
visions,
healing,
raising the dead,
prophesying.
Surviving poison snake bites
Polluted water
Cast out demons

Jesus gave these gifts to the 11 Apostles in Mark 16:14-20...……...
"Later He appeared to the eleven as they sat at the table; and He rebuked their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they did not believe those who had seen Him after He had risen. And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. He who believes and is baptized will be saved; but he who does not believe will be condemned. And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.” So then, after the Lord had spoken to them, He was received up into heaven, and sat down at the right hand of God. And they went out and preached everywhere, the Lord working with them and confirming the word through the accompanying signs. Amen."

Now I have not read through all of this thread but in almost every instance I have seen, there are those who believe they have the gifts of tongues and healing.

Now people who WANT TO have the gift of tongues and healing will argue that they are blessed with these gifts. However, please understand that In all Bible cases, a Christian received the sign gifts, either directly from Christ on earth or else through the agency or presence of the apostles.

The only exception was the apostle Paul, who saw Christ in a vision and was appointed by Him to be the apostle of the Gentiles. In no case did anyone receive the gifts without being in the immediate visible presence of Christ or His apostles, and no one except the apostle Paul ever received the gifts directly from the ascended Christ except in the presence of one or more of the apostles.

2 Corth. 12:12...……...
"The signs of a true apostle were performed among you
with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles."

That that is exactly what Paul said would happen in 1 Corth. 14:23...........
"So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?"

Actually, it stems from the heart of man who accept the words of men and refuse to accept the Word of God.

When any preacher slapped a man on the head and knocked him down, the whole church should have run out of the building.

But because they were "religious" and were looking for a SIGN instead of listening for the Word of God, they fell for the deception and now it is an acceptable practice in the church.

Also, ChristianforCats, Tongues is NOT just a Protestant phenomenon. Look up Catholic Charismatic Renewal -- I myself have gone to charismatic Catholic services.

Correct. I have also witnessed this practice in Uganda Africa.

1Co 13:8
Charity never faileth: but whether there be prophecies, they shall fail; whether there be tongues, they shall cease; whether there be knowledge, it shall vanish away.
1Co 13:9
For we know in part, and we prophesy in part.
1Co 13:10
But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away.
1Co 13:11
When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things.
1Co 13:12
For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known.

Paul writes of a WHEN and a THEN - it hasn't happenned yet.

1Co 13:10...……..
"But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away."

I would encourage you to take note that Paul makes a distinction between the disappearance of the gifts of prophecy and knowledge and that of tongues. This is done using different Greek words and voices. With prophecy and knowledge, he used a word in the passive voice which meant “to be rendered inoperative.” Note also verse 9. But with tongues he used the middle voice and a word that meant “to cease.” The middle voice suggest that this gift would gradually die and disappear on its own. Probably because its primary purpose as a sign to the Jews.

The Greek word for the phrase "Perfect is Come" is TELLION which in turn means COMPLETE.

There are only TWO things that can be considered PERFECT...….
1). Jesus Christ.
2.). The Bible.

Since Jesus is a MAN He can not be considered complete. However, when JOhn finished the last book of the Bible, the canon was then COMPLETE.

Very much disagree with your reading. Reading the whole context without the need of Koine Greek knowledge - of which we only know in part.

8 Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. 9 For we know in part and we prophesy in part, 10 but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away. 11 When I was a child, I spoke like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I gave up childish ways. 12 For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.
13 So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.
The Holy Bible: English Standard Version, (Wheaton, IL: Crossway Bibles, 2016), 1 Co 13:8–13.

"when the perfect comes" refers to the second coming of Jesus Christ not the completion of the Canon.

Between the first coming and the second coming, we are in that period of knowing in part. We need the gifts to serve and to minister to the Body of Christ, the Church.

After the second coming of Jesus Christ, there are no uses for gifts (whose function is to serve the Body). None! because we will know him and be with him "face to face". Nevertheless, Paul says, Love doesn't end like those service gifts, prophecies and tongues.

I believe some have the gift, some don’t. 100% up to God who gets what gifts.

I agree completely,I've been babtized in the holy spirit for many years now but only spoke in tongues once as initial evidence, and never again.

I think it's best to let God give the gifts, and ignore the pundits.

I really just want to know why there are denominational differences about speaking in tongues.

Major, God is complete. Thej fact that Jesus is fully man does not make him incomplete because he's fully God at the same time. I never heard anyone identify Jesus as 1/3 of God.

I think you misunderstood my comment or better said, maybe I was not clear.
Yes God is complete.
Yes Christ is the Perfect Son of Son.
Yes Jesus is the Christ and is completely God.
I did not say that Jesus is 1/3 God.

Jesus is the God-Man. He is 100% God and 100% man. As such he needed nothing to be completed.

John 1:1-4...…….
"In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind."

The word used by Paul in 1 Corth. 13:8 is "TELLION which means "COMPLETED".

People who argue that tongues have not ceased and are still valid today fail to understand that Jesus is the Perfect, Complete Son of God and therefore can NOT be included as the PERFECT in 1 Corth. 13:8.

So then, what is left as the PERFECT which when it comes will end the tongues speaking?????

The only thing that could be consider to be "Completed and Perfect"
then has to be The Bible, the COMPLETED Word of God.

In Vs1-7 Paul singled out tongues, prophecy, inspired knowledge and supernatural faith as representative of all spiritual gifts and contrasted them with love as their superior (vs. 1-7).

This contrast has to do with the value of spiritual gifts.

Then in Vs8-13 Paul referred to the three gifts of prophecies, tongues, and knowledge again obviously representing all spiritual gifts and contrasted them with the Christian virtues of faith, hope and love (vs. 8-13).

This contrast has to do with the duration of spiritual gifts.

As long as earthly life shall last, faith, hope and love will abide (v. 13), whereas spiritual gifts were going to "cease" or be "be done away" (v. 8).
The end of the gifts would be "when that which is perfect is come" (v. 10).

Absolutly nothing wrong in disagreeing with me. I am just an old country boy from Alabama...…….."Roll Tide"!!!!

I understand your comment and I need to say to you that the nouns "prophecy" and "knowledge" (vs. 2, 8) are feminine in the Greek.

But in verses 9 and 10 we have verbs, not nouns, thus requiring neuter modifiers. In verse 9 the verbs "know" and "prophesy" are both modified by the adverbial expression ek merous ("in part").

But in verse 10 those verbs and their modifiers are brought together and replaced by the single substantive expression to ek merous ("that which is in part").

So then, by the Greek linguistics, whatever is partial in verse 9 is "that" which is partial in verse 10. And since to teleion ("the perfect") is the counterpart to to ek rmerous ("that which is in part"), it is absolutely clear that the "perfect" also refers to those same verbs.

Would you agree with that grammatical observation???

Therefore, the word "perfect" describes the completion of inspired preaching and points to the consequent cessation of the spiritual gifts which enabled and confirmed that preaching.

Contrasts in 1 Corinthians 13:8-13

Between the "now" 56 AD And then "then" 96 AD

Between that which fails And that which never fails

Between that which ceases And that which does not cease

Between the part And the whole

Between the incomplete And the complete

Between the childhood state And the state of mature manhood

Between knowing only part And knowing fully

Between seeing things darkly And seeing them clearly (face to face)
