I'm massively curious about this. John 3:16-21 are among one of the most popular Bible verses you cannot go virtually anywhere without someone at least quoting John 3:16. Salvation cannot be explained any better than John 3:16. And it's among one of my own personal favorite verses. But, who exactly said it? Was it Jesus or John? Some bibles have John 3:16-21 in red and others have it in black as if it was spoken by John. For "The Bible" series on the history channel they had Diogo Morgado (The guy who played Jesus in that series) speak the words. I mean, who really was it? Was it John or Jesus?

I know it doesn't really matter because whoever said it it's still the truth. All who believe in Christ WILL be saved and all who don't WILL be condemned. But, I'm really curious as to what the vote is and I'm curious about who really said it. I mean, it really could be either of them.

No, Jesus said it or he didn't, John is quoting him here.

I think that in Chapter 3 we have recorded to us an actual discussion between Jesus and Nicademus, and John supplied inspired running commentary on it!

That could be possible. I mean it just seems weird that all of a sudden Jesus is speaking to Nicodemus about the new birth and everything and then all of a sudden he stops talking and John chimes in for the rest of Chapter 3? It doesn't really make sense. My NIV Bible has verses 16 to 31 in black and yet it has verses 1-15 in red. But yet there are other Bible translations that have verses 16-21 in red as well. I mean, I'd like to think that it is Jesus talking to Nicodemus in verses 16-21 but... idk... it's probably not the case.

Its inspired to us by the Holy Spirit, so its still the same regardless who actually was speaking!

John 3:16 is red in the King James Version. I have a King James Version and John 3:16 is in red and the King James Version was one of the first English translations of the Bible so if the King James Version says that Jesus spoke it then it must have been Jesus, but either way it is still the word of God. I also have three other translations which are the New American Standard which is my favorite translation other than the King James and then I have a New International version and a New living Translation which also quotes John 3:16 in red. My NASB is not a red letter edition but my NIV is a red letter edition and my NIV has John 3:16 in black so whether it was John or Jesus doesn’t matter because it is the word of God, but if the King James Version says it was Jesus than Jesus spoke it.

The ESV says it was Jesus too as a fun fact. I believe it was Jesus too because why would Jesus all of a sudden stop talking and then John chimes in?

The Kjv was not inspired by God , so just because the translators had it this in red does not mean it was so...

No but the kjv is one of the most accurate English translations ever done. Anyway people will be debating whether or not Jesus spoke the words until the cows come home. I think in the end it doesn't matter because its still the word of God.

I was just mostly curious who spoke the words whether it was Jesus or John narrating but in the end it doesn't matter.

I agree that The Kjv was an accurate and good translation, but not perfect, and just because the translators red lettered the words of being from Jesus Himself automatically mean that they were!
