Yes and it is common Christianity. Too many do not see outside their box and are too busy trying to impress their peers. It is sad to see but sometimes it takes awhile to see a character shed its skin.
One has to wonder how much some people really believe in the resurrection of the dead and our unseen God in Heaven, when they have no belief in demons and the power they can weild through witches and other vessels, despite the very same Holy Scriptures and Church that testifies to the resurrecttion and God saying that both are very real.

I've celebrated hundreds of masses in my 15 year life as a Catholic and I don't ever remember the Church praying for our protection against witch's spells.

Coming to think of it, protection against the spells of wizards has never come up either.

Try being a missionary in Africa. Witchcraft is very common there.

For all of you who believe in witchcraft, do you have any substantiated evidence of it ever working?

After listening to yesterday's Gospel, I'm reminded of how serious spiritual warfare can be and how silly superstitions only serve to distract us from the real battle at hand.

What you seem to misunderstand Tad, is regardless of it working it has bad effects on the soul. It has bad effects on people's lives, it leaves one spiritually open to evil. It causes people to abandon their children and worse in places like Africa etc. You can use and twist this all you like to serve your purpose but the Church takes these things seriously as does Scripture. It is not about a spell working of not, it is about the things witchcraft cause one to do and how it affects the lives of those around them. All sin has residual effects. So you are wrong. LWU simply posted a story about what these self proclaimed witches did. You have twisted it to turn it into something else which attacks the poster. Same thing was posted in the debate forum. I did not see you taking anyone to task over it.

So regardless of your constant referral to personal experience like it should apply to all people in all situations every where, it does not exclude the fact the the Catholic Church tells us to steer clear of it because these practices can and do have an affect on people.

Regardless of whether witchcraft is real (I don't think that there's any official Church teaching on this) demons are certainly real, and engaging in occult practices is a way of opening yourself up to their influence. So for that reason alone we would do well to avoid the occult and to pray for protection from occult influences.

A very detailed article on the subject. The conclusion seems to be more what the practice plants in the souls of those that practice it and the harm and hysteria it does to the surrounding community, innocent people, etc. Pretty much what I stated previously in this thread.

The op lists 2 sources. One from the BBC. Only indicating what the ridiculous ritual was and why. LWU simply stated in the title it did not work (anybody surprised?) while referencing this story.

Nonetheless we are to distance ourselves from such activities as they tend to nurture hate and all things unhealthy for the soul. Which is serious business as Sacred Scripture and the Church teach. Why lay a welcome mat for evil which fosters all sorts of effects magic or not. It's evil and goes against the teaching of Scripture and the Church.

Here is the article:

I would recommend reading this book
Interview with an Exorcist: An Insider's Look at the Devil, Demonic Possession, and the Path to Deliverance by José Antonio Fortea

Or any book by Father Amorth
European exorcists seem to have a better understanding of witchcraft then American exorcists

Both of these priests say that a majority of exorcisms they deal with happen from a relatively innocent person getting cursed from a satanic witch

Practitioners of the occult sometimes get what they want. But the power they are playing with comes from the devil, so it leads them to misery. God's power is infinitely greater, and God leads us to happiness.
