What pistol do you carry most often for your self-defense sidearm and why did you choose it?

I've been carrying a sidearm for self-defense since around 1995. That first pistol was a big ol' Ruger P90 in .45 acp. Then a S&W 686 4", and then went to Beretta, Glock, Walther, and S&W M&Ps.

They have been getting smaller and smaller over the years as I find I am much more likely to carry if it is more convenient. I now live in a very low crime area and my threat of attack is about as likely to be four-legged as it is two-legged.

For CCW around town it is a Springfield Armory XDS FDE in .40 S&W in a Remora holster or just slipped into the interior pocket of my leather jacket. It holds 7rds of either Hornady Critical Duty ammo or my custom reloads.

I picked it due to it's size and it is surprisingly the most accurate self-defense pistol I have ever fired...

When I'm in the woods, it's either my Ruger Blackhawk Bisley in .45 Colt or a S&W M&P40...

My EDC is a Glock 19. I'm a big gal so concealing it is no problem. I like how it handles, it's capacity, and I shoot well with it.
I have been considering down sizing to a Glock 43 or a Shield. I have both and like both, but haven't made the change yet.

GLOCK 19 is the gun I reach for the most. I carry a GLOCK 17 magazine with a +3 extension as backup mag giving me a total of 35 rounds. Federal HST 147gr +P, Spyderco Paramilitary 2, and Crossbreed Super tuck deluxe IWB holster. I choose the G19 because of weight, reliability, capacity, and it operates like a full size combat handgun.

I tried the Glock platform and just didn't shoot it as well as other pistols I've tried. Glocks are superb weapons and I have been toying with the idea of replacing my M&P40 Compact with the G29 for woods carry.

My partner at work is an ex AF SERE guy with no weapons experience and he asked me for a handgun recommendation and I told him to check out the G19.

There are a lot of excellent pistols out there to choose from and it boils down to what feels the best to the individual; barring Hi-Points and most Taurus offerings.

I carry a S&W 3913 in 9mm, with an extra magazine. Although it only holds 8+1, I like the thin grip, which fits my hand well. It's stainless steel which I really like, and double-action for the first shot. I grew up with DA revolvers, so it's the most natural for me.

I shoot the 1911 the best and it is by far and away my favorite its just heavy to carry although I manage to do it sometimes. GLOCKs are superb but I have found that I naturally point them a little high and I do not like that. I have a G20 that I carry when I'm in the backcountry. It is a beast and I'm sure that G29 is as well. Maybe even better because of the more compact size. I agree there are a lot of quality handguns out there and they are not Hi-Points, Taurus, Charter Arms,.

Took me a while to get used to the kick, but I love it. I've easily put 1,000+ rounds into it and hasn't jammed once. Haven't been to the range in a while now... but it is always in my car/purse.

I owned an XD Compact in .45 ACP before I switched over to the M&P series and found the XD series to be excellent pistols. My stepdad is retired law enforcement/FBI and a staunch Sig Sauer guy. But he bought an XDm in 9mm about a year ago and says he is very impressed with the pistol.

When I carry I prefer Ruger LCR .357 because it's light, it has firepower, revolvers are crazy reliable and if necessary I could shoot through a pocket. I also have a Glock 9mm which I keep in the center console of the car when driving or slip into my pocket as needed. I have no desire to hurt anyone, but it IS my responsibility to protect my family.

Usually a Sig P226. It's easy to conceal and more comfortable under my jacket, especially in church.

If I'm carrying openly then I'll usually have a 1911 If I'm hiking then then the 1911 in a drop leg holster. Feels like it's not even there.

Constant companion is a lightweight Colt Commander in .45 ACP. Has high visibility sights (in my world that means fixed sights a little higher and a little wider than factory), a moderate trigger job and a 'bump' style grip safety pad.

With me shooting standing, it will typically group (with hardball or ballistic equivalent) six inches at 25 yards. Better than that if everything is right and my eyes are on.
