Grandson (born again and Holy Spirit filled) is just getting started and has decided to stay with 9mm, I am so thankful he will not have a half dozen or more calibers to load and maintain.

To the OP the 10mm auto seems to be the best choice for your concerns, better to have and not need than to need and not have. In Oregon I am comfortable carrying a 2.75" Ruger security six 357 magnum six shot revolver. As mentioned how well you shoot the gun will trump the power of the cartridge.
