Southwest Airlines flight lands at wrong Mo. airport | Fox News

BRANSON, Mo. – A Southwest Airlines flight that was scheduled to arrive Sunday night at Branson Airport in southwest Missouri instead landed at an airport 7 miles north -- with a runway half the size of the intended destination.

My brother owns a light plane, he uses a simple automobile type GPS device, maybe the airlines should borrow one from the passingers to make sure they get to where they're going.

How can a major airport be mistaken for a small one?

Without knowing much about the exact situation - airports have a similar layout and/or pilot is unfamiliar with the airport, pilot accidentally enters wrong airport into autopilot, poor visibility/darkness means the pilot can't see airport is obviously not right, outdated tech at air traffic control makes it less likely that control would realize a problem until it's too late.

Combine that all together and you're landing at the wrong airport.

Edit: Looking at google maps, both airports are single runway in similar orientations (though probably a 10 degree difference).
Edit2: 20 degree difference, Branson has runways 14/32 and the other one has runways 12/30.
