Mandatory budget cuts are causing even military personnel to be furloughed. The sequester was supposed to be so bad that neither side would go through with it, but they played chicken instead of dealing with each other.

KAPOLEI, Hawaii - More than 1,100 National Guard soldiers and airmen in Hawaii - and thousands in other states - will be living with 20 percent less pay over the next three months as the Defense Department carries out automatic federal budget cuts.

...It's not clear precisely what effects the unprecedented cuts will have. They could, however, make it more difficult for the guard to fly helicopters to help put out wildfires or rush to the scene of natural disasters in trucks.

This is actually a typical Democrat tactic whenever there are budget cuts, try to make it so it hurts the public the most and targets vital areas, rather than actually cutting wasteful spending.

Obama and the Democrats are just playing politics as usual and the left-wing media is letting them get away with using the Tea Party as a scapegoat.

This is only the beginning. Wait until the Federal government can't mail out Social Security checks, or make Medicare payments, or provide enough cash to pay the active-duty armed forces.

Wait until the dollar becomes so devalued that come April 15, millions of American default on making income tax payments to the IRS.

Wait until there's no money to ship anything anywhere: no food, no gas, no heating oil, no prescription medication, no regular mail delivery.

Wait until every company in America shuts down indefinitely because there's no more money to manufacture their products, ship them out, pay their employees, maintain their facilites, or provide them with health-care insurance.

Wait until the hospitals close down; the police departments disband; the fire departments can't respond; the supermarkets have nothing to sell. Wait until a loaf of Wonder bread costs you $311,000.78.

How will all this come about, you ask? See for yourself:

U.S. National Debt Clock : Real Time

She's about to pass seventeen trillion dollars, kids. This is unsustainable. It. Will. Collapse. Period.

And when it does, we're all going to be in for a very nasty ride.

No, this was a bipartisan effort to make the sequester so painful that both sides would have to negotiate.

We should cut spending by making the budget cuts affect the politicians first. Take away all their perks, like private jets, chauffeur driven cars, personal security.

At this point our enemies abroad are laughing their collective tails off. Nothing like compromising national security for the ultimate pout from the halls of D.C.

Believe it or not, Republicans in the house have actually cut some of their perks...

Is there an article we might read for reference concerning that?

Instead of spending money for an apartment San Diego U.S. Representative Duncan Hunter bunks down in his office when in Washington. He isn’t alone. Some 40 congressmen make up a “nocturnal Hooverville” inside the Cannon House Office Building. Many are newer Representatives and Tea Party members who insist that their roots have to stay in their districts and not in the District of Columbia.

I'd be more concerned by this if Obama wasn't busy running off to africa a trip that cost 60-100 million and promising them 5 billion over the next few years.

If we were really hurting enough that these people had to be furloughed then we shouldn't be able to afford these trips or gifting this money to people.

Funny how I don't hear a whisper of complaint about the expense of the trip to Africa by former President and First Lady Bush. They met up with the Obamas on one leg of the African trip.

It's a different budget item. Would it comfort you to know that Obama has cut back on the programs in Africa put in place by Bush? I think it was one of the better things Bush did in his time in office.

The sequester was a time bomb designed to force action.
Turns out a time bomb is a bad idea when one side wants to blow up the building.

Not so much "want" to blow it up, but sees working with the "enemy" as an even worse alternative.

Now, if instead of a sequester, the bill said something like "fix this or you're all fired," we would've seen results -- Congress cares about its own livelihood a lot more than it cares about the country.
