Many right-wing fundamentalists, including Pat Robertson (or is it Robinson? You know who i'm talking about) support the death penalty. Upon reading "Blessed be the mericful, for they shall obtain mercy" (Matt 5:7), I do not think we should have the death penalty. Our Christian tradition teaches us to be forgiving. Murders definitly should remain in prision for the rest of their lives, but the death penalty should not be a form of punishment. There is also the "don't kill" rule in the Ten Commandments.
Other reasons to abolish the death penalty:
1) It does not bring the victim back
2) There is no evidence it deters violent crimes.
3) The death penalty costs between one and three MILLION dollars, while life in prison costs about $500,000.
4) Victim's families almost never, if ever, feel closure from the death penalty
5) THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM IS NOT PERFECT. INNOCENT PEOPLE ARE BOUND TO BE CONVICTED AND SENTENCED TO DEATH IF CAPITAL PUNISHMENT IS NOT ABOLISHED!!!
6)In the end, all it does is cuts forty or fifty years off a criminal's sentence. Why do right-wingers want to let these guys out early?

Hi all!

BlueSubmarine, be careful of basing anti-death penalty arguments on
the "don't kill" rule in the Ten Commandments
because there is no such thing.

Not to make light of killing under any circumstances (God forbid!), but I always note how so many people cite "Thou Shalt Not Kill". The Bible doesn't say that. The original Hebrew (in both Exodus 20:13 and Deuteronomy 5:17) says Lo tirtzakh, which literally means "Thou Shalt Not Murder." In both Biblical and modern Hebrew, "Thou Shalt Not Kill" would be Lo taharog; it doesn't say that.

Be well!

I find this statement very unbelievable. Please...$3M dollars worth of electricity. If that's the case I can get a box of thirty ot six down at walmart and take care of 25 murderers for $12 bux.

Besides, even though I am no bible scholar, there is a lot in the bible about justice.

That's the cost from time of arrest to execution, including the cost of all of the lawyers, so it's not just the execution process that contributes to the high price tag. I would rather see the low-life murderers put and jail for life and have thousands of dollars put into getting more police on the streets and helping the victim's families out.

Ha! I liked My Higher Self's answer!  Hey a box of bullets and a rope don't cost much at all!

The reason it costs so much is because they get way to many appeals!  They should only get one.  And 500,000 dollars for life in prison!!!!!!!!!!!!!  Where did you get that figure?  Maybe thats for all the life in prison convicts who get out in 7-10 yrs because they supposedly got "life in prison".  It costs a heck of a lot more to keep them in there and they get it easy...Has anyone SEEN the cake walk prisons we have!

How many innocent people have lost their lives Honestly?  A handful out of the thousands killed.....Give me a break!

I dont even get the 6th one!

They should be put in prison, with nothing but food and water. No gyms to
lift weights, or basketball courts, no television, nothing. They should just
be aloud to sit and eat. Sounds cuel, but why should we (as tax payers)
pay for all of the "necessities", to put it lightly, and live a descent life.
Those are the things that should be a privilage, not a need; and since they
have broken the law, then why should they be rewarded? Just a thought.

Force, do you want innocent people to be put to death, because that is what is going to happen, if it hasn't happened already. And if people quit getting appeals, even more innocent people will die. $500,000 is the price tag for keeping someone in prison for the rest of their lives, not 10 years. If one person dies in the death penalty, the system is serverly flawed. What if that person was your son, brother, or father. I can't explain point 6 any clearer.

Well if one of my family members or even I commit the crime, we will have to pay the consequences.  Although I will still love them.  Justice needs to be served.  Laws need to be abided by.
