What age did you start potty training your children?

What worked the best?
I need some help in this area. I have a 20 months old boy who is not interested in doing in a potty. He will stay there but nothing. Put back a diaper and there it is.... I don't know what to do.
i want to learned from others mom.

Wow! 20 months is pretty young for potty training-unless baby is really showing interest.

I personally have not had kids who have instantly potty trained- it's been a several month thing, where their interest has waxed and waned.

If you really want them to train, you have to accept the messiness of it all (in my opinion). No diapers. Commit to putting them in training underwear, and whenever they pee or poo in their pants- go and sit them on the potty and talk about how this is where we poo and pee. Depending on the child things will click in a few days, weeks or months.

Don't fret about it--really how many kids in middle scool are in diapers :) Or elementary school? It will happen- don't lose you peace over it.

Thank you so much. We are living right now in Eastern Europe and they train their children very young 1 year. So I feel some pressure and this is our first so I don't know what to do. Some people are surprised that our boy don't ask for potty at his age. So I was just wanted to learn from others mom experience in this area.

There is no point in starting potty training until the kids show some interest. I tried to push my son, and it was just frustrating to both of us.

We started thinking we was finally ready when, at bathtime, we would put him on the toilet before putting him in the bath. He would go pee almost every time. Occasionally he would poo too.

It took a LONG time for him to train. We used disposable training pants like PullUps, but they are just glorified diapers. He didn't completely train until we started putting him in underwear all the time. Sure, there were a few days of accidents, but it became habit must faster than it did trying it with PullUps.

Twenty months is very, very young for potty training. I would suggest waiting several more months.

I started my first child before the age of two and it was a major hassle. Disappointments with accidents, frantically running around with spray disinfectant, frustration on his part etc. He went on to have problems with bedwetting until quite a late age.

The other four, I left until they were ready, which was around the third birthday (the time they went to nursery school). Consequently, they were dry day and night from the start, with no accidents and no problems.

Perhaps I could have trained them a few months earlier, but what would have been the point? There's a certain security in being in nappies, especially when you are out and about. You don't have to hunt for clean toilets, or stop en route on long car journeys. Bliss. It is completely different once they are in pants, and you have something else to think about.

If he has no interest, don't push it. That will just lead to frustration for both of you. There is not rush to potty train a child, the easiest and fast way for a child to potty train is to learn at their own speed. Just show him the potty, show him how to work it, have Daddy show him what to do in the potty and leave it at that.

I hope so!! I am starting to stress over it. She like to go into the bathroom with me when I go and she knows what is going on. Is that a sign. She knows the words pee and poopoo. She tells me that she has poopooed but not all the time. I don't know what to look for.

There are some neat books for little ones about going to the potty, check your local library or amazon.
Some signs might be that she lets you know she is aware of having pooped or talks about her wet diaper. Maybe getting a potty and playing with it with a doll that can pee would be a good incentive.
All kids are different, I tried to train my son soon after his second birthday, we both were miserable and frustrated and he finally got trained when he was ready at about 3.
My daughter is now 2 1/2 and I am much more relaxed. She sits on the potty whenever we think about it, before bath and maybe if I am in there going. And this summer we will be outside alot and maybe wearing elmo undies but really, she'll train when she is ready and nothing I do to push her will help.
Good luck

I didn't force anything on my 2 year old.. when she was ready she let me know and just went on the potty... that was when she was 18 months... then after about a month decided she didn't want to do it anymore and didn't fully potty train until 28 months... so we just went with the flow... I plan on doing that with my youngest also...

my son was about 2 1/2. I don't usually watch Dr. Phil, but I watched his show about potty training, and his way worked for us. Basically when you start potty training seriously, start by making it fun (party atmosphere, get his stuffed animals to potty too). We did first practices outside on the back porch, waiting til he had to pee. I had bought a secret new toy (water squirters) that were the prize for when he peed right on his potty chair. That worked, and having a couple accidents (when they are really training and making the switch) helps to reinforce that going potty feels better than wet pants. But going poo-poo is harder, my son could not clean up himself, he did some of the times, but was not wiping himself well and would get rashes. So I had to help him with that even when he was in kindergarten.

I am thankful he only had couple accidents at night. I used to be a bedwetter when I was a kid, that isn't something you can train kids to stop, unfortunately, I took some meds for it, and did all kinds of beeper machines that were annoying and finally stopped at age 11. that is a different thing than just a potty training issue, but just wanted to share.

My son is 14 months old and I don`t think I will start potty training till he is 2 years old or until he shows signs that he is ready
