  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

Anyone up for a chat thread?

I occasionally like to indulge in some chili dogs after church.
It seems like if you had a really good sermon, you ought to reward yourself.

Here is something I have found very unexpected in my new role.

So; I'm spending a lot of time visiting practicing Anglicans who are in hospital. And I would have thought I'd be listening to them talk about their health, their emotions, their relationships (etc). But I reckon about 80% of the conversations I'm having with these folk are about their problems in their parish. What they don't like about their rector, struggling with change, parish conflict, whatever.

It's like... I'm of their world enough for them to think I'll get where they're coming from, but far enough from their particular parish to be an impartial listener.

What it's actually making me think, though, is that we've obviously done a terrible job equipping people with the skills, the character, and the wisdom to navigate conflict and interpersonal issues in the church. And I am wondering whether there might be something that we could be doing better...

It's early days, but I'd say the over-arching common theme would probably be, we are utterly lousy at communication and healthy conflict. (By which I mean, actually working through issues rather than all the games we see played in parishes rather than dealing with the underlying problem).

And, on the other side, if you had a really bad morning, you ought to console yourself.

No? Just me?
That's what the ice cream stands are for. Although they'll be closing for the winter soon. One already did.
