  • CF has always been a site that welcomes people from different backgrounds and beliefs to participate in discussion and even debate. That is the nature of its ministry. In view of recent events emotions are running very high. We need to remind people of some basic principles in debating on this site. We need to be civil when we express differences in opinion. No personal attacks. Avoid you, your statements. Don't characterize an entire political party with comparisons to Fascism or Communism or other extreme movements that committed atrocities. CF is not the place for broad brush or blanket statements about groups and political parties. Put the broad brushes and blankets away when you come to CF, better yet, put them in the incinerator. Debate had no place for them. We need to remember that people that commit acts of violence represent themselves or a small extreme faction.

DOJ Quietly Deletes Study After Charlie Kirk's Death That Says Right-Wing Extremists Engage in 'Far More' Political Violence

"Like we keep telling you over and over again, we have empathy!".

Did you hear that Charlie Kirk was just assassinated?

"Hooray we're so happy! Thank you Mr. Assassin!"
This only makes even a modicum of sense if you insist on viewing "the left" as a monolithic entity.

Are you claiming you are incapable of understanding how other humans feel?

I am claiming that I can't possibly understand how it feels to have my spouse assassinated right in front of me.

Are you claiming you ARE capable of understanding how that feels?

We’re all capable of experiencing deep and devastating sorrow; being willing to plumb the depths of our own emotions in order to get “closer” to what the actual victim (in the instant case, Erika Kirk), must be going through, takes commitment.

Yes, we've all experienced deep and devastating sorrow. But I would wager that none of us has ever had a spouse assassinated in front of us. I've even seen comments on social media posts where people didn't think Erika Kirk looked or acted sad enough for their liking.

"How could she get up in front of all those people and make a speech like that just days after her husband died? I didn't even want to see anyone for months after I lost my husband to cancer." This is a paraphrase of an actual comment on a post I saw on social media. Here we have a person that SHOULD be able to empathize with Erika Kirk. They both lost a spouse. But you see, this person was affected differently. And because Erika Kirk is mourning and grieving differently than she did, it caused this person not to have empathy, but to question the sincerity of Erika Kirk's love and devotion to her husband.

Everyone experiences grief differently. When my grandmother died, it devastated my grandfather. He was never the same again. He went into a deep depression that never subsided. He lived the next 15 years of his life in a constant state of hurt. But when my co-worker lost her husband at 60, she decided that she was going to live life to its fullest. She went skydiving. She started traveling internationally. It made her realize that life is short, and you only get one chance to do the things you want to do.

Both of these are examples of great loss and sorrow. But the effects were profoundly different. That's been my point all along. "Empathy" is defined as the ability to understand how another person is feeling. But even if you've experienced the same things, you cannot understand how another person is impacted by that same tragedy. And in the examples I've listed, it might cause you to wonder if maybe you loved your spouse more because you hurt more. And then you aren't empathizing. You're judging and criticizing.

Instead of trying to understand how or why another person feels what they feel, I find it better to offer support and compassion no matter how they are feeling or have been affected. Then there is no opportunity for me to judge if I think they've been impacted the way I imagine they should have been.

No one deserves assassination. Not even Kirk.

Uh... Yes. Unless you have never gone through a traumatic experience in your life you must have some understanding of how devastating it would be. I do not claim I understand every nuance but that is not what empathy is.

I won't even pretend to understand what Erika Kirk is feeling.

Then I commend you for knowing your limits. I have lost people close to me in tragic circumstances. I have an understanding of what she is going through,

I'm surprised this comment has been allowed to remain.
It is a clear indication of your compliance with your fathers will.
John 8:44
For you are the children of your father the devil, and you love to do the evil things he does. He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies.

Lots of people did exactly what was described on social media according to news reports.

The left is showing more empathy for Kirk's family than he did for George Floyd.
Please do not compare Charlie Kirk to George Floyd. That is insulting. Burning and looting cities is not showing empathy towards anyone, especially the Floyd family that George didnt seem to care about either.

This line of conversation started because someone took a quote from Charlie Kirk out of context where he said that he didn't like the word empathy. The purpose of me posting all of this was to explain why he might have said that. Regardless, the reason people post that quote from Kirk removed from its proper context is to make it seem like he was advocating being uncaring towards others. But as the full quote demonstrates, he said he preferred the words sympathy and compassion. I generally agree with that position for the reasons I've stated.
“Man decries ‘empathy’!” sells more books, too.
The man was a “professional-arguer”, at base…this is schtick, bucking “convention wisdom” while agreeing that “good things are good”. He was excellent at it.
